12/9 - TODAY IN HISTORY - 12/9/1825 after bitter street to street and house to house fighting the Texian Army captures San Antonio de Bexar Texas by defeating the Mexican Army stationed there under General Martin Perfecto De Cos and gained control of the church ruins or "fort" known as the Alamo. Funny, the first battle of the Alamo the Texans were outside and the Mexicans were inside. This of course was reversed three months later when Mexican President Antonio Lopez De Santa Anna returned to San Antonio with at least 3500 troops, re-took the town without a fight and laid siege to the Texans who retreated into the Alamo. The siege lasted for 13 days and ended with all 189+ Texan defenders being killed.

12/7 - TODAY IN HISTORY - 12/7/1941 "Today, December seventh, nineteen forty one, a date that will live in infamy. In a dastardly and cowardly attack..." The words of President Franklin D. Rosevelt as he begins to address congress for a declaration of war after The Japanese empire suddenly and surprising attack the US Naval forces docked at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The Japanese decided on this attack as war was brewing in the islands of southern Asia and The United States was the only country that offered any real threat in the Pasific. The plan was to destroy the American navy that was downsized dramatically after WW1. Some Japanese Admirals, notably Yamamoto who studied in the US, opposed the attack noting that the US had an unparalleled industrial ability, they could recover quickly and if Japan attacked they would be "Awaking the sleeping giant". Fortunately the US Carriers (the teeth of the fleet) were out to sea doing training maneuvers and were not harmed. Unfortunately the ships in the harbor were sitting ducks as more than 400 Japanese planes quickly destroyed and overrun the 74 US planes present and bombed the fleet mercilessly killing 2403 Americans, almost all soldiers. Many of these soldiers remain in the ships at the bottom of the harbor as they could not be recovered. These ships act as the graves for these soldiers and are a national park and cemetery.

12/6 TODAY IN HISTORY - 12/6/1921 Irish free state declaired. After almost two years of vishious gorilla fighting the southern four fifths of Ireland officially declared itself a free state. South Ireland had long tensions with Britain more directly England and its rule of the island dating back to medieval times. Unorganized revolts and pitchfork rallies were unsuccessful for almost 300 years until the end of the nineteenth century when industrial weapons were introduced. Fighting between the (IRA) and Northern Ireland continues until the 1990's and some tensions still survive today.

12/5 - TODAY IN HISTORY 12/5/1876 Ominously simular to current events a terrible fire breaks out in Brooklyn, New York at the Brooklyn Theater killing 278. Obviously the need for humans to stay warm in the wintertime is a dangerous one. Although heat sources and fire response systems have improved, we still have to take this very seriously. Thoughts and prayers from VH360 for those effected by the fires across the country.

12/2 - TODAY IN HISTORY - 12/2/2001 Enron files for bankruptcy. In one of the most devious acts in the 21st century Enron CEO Kenneth Lay files chapter 11 bankruptcy. Enron was an "Energy Trading" company that saw a dramatic rise in power from 1998 to 2000 claiming a revenue of $111 Billion revenue in 2000 and employing 21,000 people. The company saw the quickest decline in history in less than a year between 2000-2001 seeing stock prices fall from $90.72 to $0.26. Lay continued to urge employees and investors to buy stock (largely from him) during the fall as he predicted a massive rebound. When it was all over twenty thousand people lost their jobs, billions in retirements were lost and $2.1 Billion of retirement pensions were now worth $0 while Lay and other top executives profited profoundly during the sell off becoming billionaires.
