Buffalo Presidential Center Exploring the legacies of Presidents Millard Fillmore and Grover Cleveland and other Western New Yorkers prominent in national affairs

The mission of the Buffalo Presidential Center is to encourage the study, exploration, interpretation, and public awareness of Buffalo and Western New York's contribution to the presidency and national affairs. Our main focus is on Buffalo's two presidents, Millard Fillmore and Grover Cleveland, but our interest includes other Western New Yorkers who have shaped our nation as leading participants

in national government, the judiciary, policymaking and public affairs. Through spotlighting this historical legacy, we hope to promote interest in contemporary issues related to the presidency and national affairs.

Freddie Happy, an elementary school student at East Aurora's Immaculate Conception School, was a part of the winning team at the Buffalo Presidential Center's Kids Trivia Contest on May 3.

After registering, participating teams, who were in grades 3 through 5, were sent a set of presidential flashcards with fun and interesting facts about all 45 presidents to prepare for the Jeopardy-style contest against local historians, who did not have access to the flashcards. The team of eight students beat the historians - answering every question correctly.

Monday, April 27, 2026, marks the 161st anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s funeral "obsequies" in Buffalo. There were actually TWO events when the city honored the slain president. The first was a “mock funeral” on April 19, 1865, the same day services and processions were held in Washington D.C. and other cities around the country. Eight days later his funeral train stopped in Buffalo’s St. James Hall where 80,000 – 100,000 people viewed Lincoln’s body in an open casket.

I invite you to visit the Buffalo Presidential Center on the second floor of the Buffalo Erie County Public Library from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturdays in through May 9th. You will have an opportunity to view several rare Lincoln mourning artifacts on display and learn more about these events from our docents.

Of special attention in the museum’s exhibit is a special Dinner Bill of Fare at the Mansion House honoring Lincoln on April 27, 1865. Note the menu and the wine list. I can’t imagine many of those leaflets survived.

Lincoln Exhibit
Early in the morning hours of April 27, 1865, Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train arrived at Buffalo’s Exchange Street Station. After a 1.5-mile procession through the streets of downtown, it stopped at St. James Hall (M&T Plaza today) where his body lay in state from 10:00 a.m. through 8:00 p.m. An estimated 80,000-100,000 people viewed his open casket that day. In commemoration this April, visitors to the Buffalo Presidential Center can view some rare artifacts from that event, along with some interesting memorial objects.
