hat began with a call for creative new uses that brought signature events such as Boom Days and City of Night, now continues at the iconic 140-foot-tall Marine A elevator with not only the recently-announced Silo City Rocks indoor/outdoor rock climbing gym and bouldering center, but also the Buffalo Mustache Hall of Fame and Museum, which was announced this morning. Slated to open this August and funded with support from The Good Neighborhood and Flying Bison Brewing Company, the museum will feature artifacts and artistic installations housed inside the towering, 88-year-old Marine A. Cotter, the world’s oldest working fireboat that resides just up the Buffalo River from Silo City. In a sort of spoiler for four of the Hall’s first inductees, Buffalo artist Max Collins revealed a rendition of a giant mural that will cover one side of Marine A featuring famous mustached Buffalonians Grover Cleveland, Lindy Ruff, Rick James and Mark Twain, affectionately named “Mount Stachemore,” which will be honored with a new Flying Bison brew in its name. The brew will debut at Boom Days, while the mural will be unveiled at the second annual City of Night event on August 17th.
“Some might bristle at this idea, but it’s truly a perfect pairing – mustaches and grain elevators are both back in style,” smiled Silo City owner Rick Smith with a wide grin below his own beloved mustache. “This is one more creative and exciting way for our community to reclaim and redefine these once-neglected areas – people from all walks will flock to Silo City to see the museum and Mount Stachemore, which will be seen for miles.”
Added Flying Bison head brewer Tim Herzog: “My mustache is made thick by the foam of Flying Bison beer; in turn, Mount Stachemore Ale has a thick-hearted body and smooth finish, and we look forward to serving it at Silo City for centuries to come.”
