Founded in 1862, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum (formerly the Albright-Knox Art Gallery) is the sixth-oldest public art institution in the United States. For more than 160 years, the Buffalo AKG has collected, conserved, and exhibited the art of its time, often working directly with living artists. This tradition has given rise to one of the world’s most extraordinary collections of modern and contemporary art.

Participants are encouraged to explore the museum’s collection and Public Art Initiative for inspiration, offering fresh perspectives on the artworks that make our institution unique. We can’t wait to see the creativity, craftsmanship, and community spirit that come together to make Art Alive’s 30th anniversary an unforgettable celebration of art in all its forms. Join us today, September 4, for a very special M&T FIRST FRIDAY as we celebrate the opening of "Ragnar Kjartansson: Politics of the Obvious"! The exhibition is now on view on Floor 1 of the Gundlach Building. To pay homage to one of the artist's most famous works, "The Visitors," musicians will take over our campus in busker-style performances. Don't forget—admission is Pay What You Wish from 10 am to 9 pm!

Celebrate "Ali Banisadr: Temple of the Mind" with us at Sonic Studio! Join exhibition artist (and former DJ) Ali Banisadr and Bill Brandel from The Vintage Audio Shop on Friday, September 11, at 8 pm, on the Sculpture Terrace, as they spin a curated collection of vintage vinyl that draws on elements of the artist’s process.

"Ragnar Kjartansson: Politics of the Obvious" opens NEXT WEEK! The Members' Preview will take place on Thursday, September 3, from 4 to 7 pm on Floors 1 and 2 of the Gundlach Building. A Voices in Contemporary Art Talk with the artist and Charles Balbach Chief Curator Cathleen Chaffee will follow in the Lipsey Auditorium at 8 pm and is open to the public. The exhibition will be open to the public on M&T FIRST FRIDAY, September 4! The Buffalo AKG is saddened to learn of the death of artist Yayoi Kusama. For nearly a year, we were honored to present an exhibition of works by the artist, "One with Eternity: Yayoi Kusama." This exhibition ended in July 2026, but endowed the museum and its community with lasting memories and experiences of this influential and distinctive artist's work.
Visitors explored Kusama's unique vision of self-obliteration, a radical approach to connecting with others and the universe. Observing one's body in the infinite space of a mirrored room or losing one's sense of place by navigating a field of colorful lamps, the boundary between the self and the outside world is dissolved and visitors become one with everything around them, one with eternity.

NOW ON VIEW: "Natvar Bhavsar: Free Yourself" is now on view in the M&T Bank Gallery, located in the Knox Building, through Sunday, April 4, 2027! This exhibition surveys fifty years of the artist's expressive abstractions, inviting viewers to meditate on the power of pure color.
