Burlington Historical Society Museum

Burlington Historical Society Museum The Burlington Historical Society of Burlington, Wisconsin, was established in 1928 to collect and preserve historical records and artifacts.

Our mission is to preserve the history of Burlington for future generations. Annual membership dues and donations go towards maintaining the Historical Society owned buildings and sites in the Burlington area. These properties include the Historical Society Museum (built in 1883), the Whitman School (built in 1840), the Pioneer Log Cabin (located in Wehmhoff Square), and several others. The Societ

y also contributes to historical restoration projects around the Burlington area, such as the refurbishment of our one-of-a-kind Abraham Lincoln Statue, located at the intersection of Kane Street and State Street.

This house, known as the "Diener-Beller House" was on the east bank of the Fox River at the Jefferson St. Bridge.

The house was razed in 1942 after the property was donated to the City of Burlington to be used as a city park.

The 2nd photo shows that area of Burlington as it is today.

In 1968, the area automobile dealers had an "open house" type of event to show off the new models that just came out.

They used the then vacant lot on the corner of N. Kane St. and E. Washington St.

That property today is the location of the "Mini-Bank" Drive-Up facility of Town Bank.

The photo view is to the south taken from the alley behind Tietel's Standard gas station.

The house in the background at right was the Ferd and Louise Robers house, now the offices of Fidelity Title.

The house at far left with the turret was one of many along the north side of Washington St. that were razed to make way for parking along that entire area of downtown.

Back in the "slow news" days, a fender-bender in town was always a news item -

This mishap took place on McHenry St. next to the historic Triangle Tavern. Years later, the tavern was renamed back to its original name of B. J. Wentker's.

The building in the background at left behind the Triangle was called the "Wentker House" which was a hotel/boarding house. That was razed in 1959 to make way for a gas station. That corner is now a city park.

Also, it looks like a trip to the car wash was not very popular back in those days.

The building on N. Pine St. at Washington St. that is now occupied by Trend Setters was built as the Burlington Town Hall.

It was later purchased by Bazal Creamery in 1925 when the present day City Hall was built at the south end of that block. The top section of the building was removed. Additions to the east were also added to the original building.

The original building also had the fire department in the back area of the building. The tower on the building had a fire bell to call the volunteers upon notice of a fire.
