Okay folks, this is the way to travel. A 1952 Executive Starship built by Mid State Corp with a helipad in the rear for a Bell Model 47D helicopter-very much like the Bell H-13 helicopter on display at the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas-if you're on a fishing trip and run out of bait, you can just fly your helicopter to the store to get more bait. Come on down to the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF and see their H-13 helicopter. You can sit in the cockpit and imagine what was it was like to fly off the back of a monster motor home. By the way, this monster motorhome was 65 feet long and weighed 80 tons so it's no surprise only one was made. The Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF, one mile and 80 years from town.

During WWII, many pilots wanted to see how fast they could push the PT-19 trainer-just like the PT-19 in the hangar of the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas- they would point the aircraft straight into a vertical dive. To their surprise, the plane simply refused to accelerate past the redline, no matter how steep the angle. The culprit? The plane was aerodynamically so "dirty" (with exposed rivets, wires, and dual open cockpits) that the drag created a natural speed governor, preventing the young cadets from over-stressing the airframe in a dive. Smart airplane. Come on over to the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF and see their pretty PT-19 and maybe get a ride in it. The Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF, one mile and 80 years from town.

The Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF has a great Cadet program run by Matt Brzostowski. Young adults, aged 13 to 17 can join up and learn about the history of the old airplanes, how they work, and the heroes that fly them. The help work on the old airplanes and provide vital assistance during airshows. It's an opportunity that they can't pass up! The cadets meet on the fourth Saturday of every month at 1000, in the CAF Highland Lakes Squadron hangar, Burnet Airport. The next meeting will be on the 25th October-don't miss it! For more information, drop a line to Matt Brzostowski, CAF Highland Lakes Squadron Cadet Advisor at [email protected]. The Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF, one mile and 80 years from town.

Okay folks, you need to mark Tuesday, July 21 on your calendar and set that day aside to come to the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas to see the Solar Car Challenge race which will be stopping at the hangar. Come on over and see the future meet the past. These solar cars are designed and built by high school students and they are pretty neat to see. While you're there, you can see the warbirds in our hangar and visit our museum and then go out to eat at one of the great restaurants in Burnet. Sounds like a super day to me! They should be arriving at the hangar around 10:00 am but we're open all day. The Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF, one mile and 80 years from town.

Folks, you have to admit, that L-17 Navion is one tough airplane-very much like the L-17 Navion in the hangar of the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas-In 2019, a pilot flying a Navion was on approach to an airport in Louisiana when a flock of birds flew in front of him. To avoid hitting them, the pilot put the airplane into a dive and in the process clipped some power lines shearing off the vertical stabilizer and rudder. Incredibly, the pilot kept the airplane under control and managed to land at an airport although the airplane veered off the runway. The pilot climbed down from the plane and walked away unhurt. Apparently, this Navion is flying once more. Just look at that photo. An amazing airplane and pilot. Come on by the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF and sed their pretty Navion and maybe take a ride in it. The Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF, one mile and 80 years from town.

Here's a little known gem about the North American Harvard-very much like the gorgeous SNJ in the hangar of the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas-Before the United States entered WWII, the U.S. observed strict neutrality laws. A vintage 1940 North American Harvard (the T-6 variant for the British Commonwealth) was purchased by Canada, but due to U.S. neutrality at the time, it couldn't be flown across the international border. To get around this technicality, the aircraft was literally pulled across the border into Canada by horses. Now that's horse power! Come on over to the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF and see their SNJ and maybe catch a ride in it. The Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF, one mile and 80 years from town.

Folks, the Bell H-13 helicopter-just like the one on display in the hangar of the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas-was so good, the Batman and Robin used it as their "Batcopter" The helicopter used in the series "Batman" was also used in filming the "Lassie" series and was also used by ABC sports. Although it has passed through several owners since then, this helicopter is still flying today. Come on by the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF and see their H-13 helicopter. You can sit in the cockpit and get the feel of it. The Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF, one mile and 80 years from town.

Here's one for the books. On February 10, 1945, P-51 pilot Captain Louis E. Curdes shot down an American C-47 on purpose-just like the very pretty C-47 "Texas Zephyr" in the hangar of the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas- The C-47 was lost, low on fuel, and heading to land on a Japanese-occupied island (Bataan) in the Philippines. To prevent the crew and passengers from being captured or killed, Curdes disabled both engines to force a water landing. The sturdy C-47 remained afloat for 15 minutes and all on board were rescued by the US Navy. In a weird twist, Curdes had a blind date with one the nurses on the C-47 the previous night. He had no idea she was on board the C-47. Come on by the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF and see the C-47 "Texas zephyr" and maybe soon get a ride in it.
