🛢️ Here’s one they don’t teach in school: for nearly a decade, Ohio was America’s leading oil-producing state. 😮

Ohio’s petroleum story reaches back to the early 1800s, but a major chapter began in 1859, when blacksmith William Jeffrey struck oil while drilling in Mecca Township, Trumbull County — right next door to Geauga County.

The discovery helped ignite an early local oil rush. But Ohio’s truly enormous boom came later, as major fields were developed across northwestern Ohio in the 1880s and 1890s.

By 1896, Ohio produced nearly 24 MILLION barrels of oil in a single year — and from 1895 through 1903, Ohio was the nation’s leading oil-producing state. 🏆

That black-gold story happened right here in Ohio — and it’s part of the history our Oil & Gas exhibit at Century Village Museum helps bring to life. 🪨

🔎 What made a pioneer family stop RIGHT HERE and say “this is home”? 👀 Keep swiping… 👉
When settlers reached the Western Reserve, they weren’t picking spots at random — they were reading the land. 🌲 They looked for three things, and our corner of Ohio had all of them:
💧 Water — clear springs and creeks to drink from and power a mill.
🪵 Wood — endless straight timber to raise a cabin and split a fence.
🪨 Stone — solid rock for a hearth, a chimney, a foundation.

It's that time of year again at the Century Village Museum! Our Annual Co****le Tournament has been updated to Saturday, Sept 12th, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. This will also coincide with our Annual Balloon Festival, so there will be a ton of fun activities all day for the whole family.

Century Village Museum is casting for Little Women: A Victorian Christmas, and you don’t need years of theater experience to audition.

We’re looking for four women ready to bring these unforgettable characters to life:
