This picture and poem were printed on an 20 inch by 18 inch silken cloth. It says "Happy New Year & Prosperous Butte" dedicated to the carriers (paperboys) with an 48 line poem in 1891 from The Butte Daily Miner.

All the different ethnic groups that came to the Butte area brought their country’s sports. The Irish in particular brought three; Gaelic Football which is where we get American Football, Handball which is the mother of Racketball and Hurling. Hurling is one of the most ancient sports. It was first recorded in 1272 B.C. The picture shows the 1911 Montana Hurling Champions, the Butte Wolfe Tones, named after the Irish patriot Theobald Wolfe Tone.
Hurling started making a come back in Montana in 2014 and Butte in 2018. The Butte team was named after 1911 champions - Wolfe Tones. Hurling players from all over the country will converge on Butte Aug 13 and 14. On the 13th, at the Original Mine at 6:30 is a chance to meet the players and listen to Dublin Gulch from 7:00 to 9:00. On Saturday at the Jeremy Bullock Field near Margaret Leary School from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm is a chance to see several hurling matches with players from all over the United States.

June 13 is Miners Union Day. Honor those men who dug the ore and gave Butte its unique character. The World Museum of Mining is contributing to the celebration by offering free admission to the museum and Hell Roaring Gulch. They are also offering reduced underground tours $14.00 for adults; $12.00 for those 65 and older; and $10.00 for those age 5-17. They HIGHLY recommend making underground reservations in advance as the tours due tend to book. Reservations can be made at www.miningmuseum.org.

The Butte Public Library will be displaying two objects that were donated to the Butte Historical Society. One is a 120 year old china set made in France for the Butte Jewelers of Hight & Fairfield.
The other is a 1901 special cloth program from the Grand Opera House in Butte that was given to J.R. Wharton, who was the designer and builder of the Columbia Gardens for William A. Clark.

The old Butte High was located where Butte Central is today.

The Greater Butte Project was conceived under Con Kelley, President of the Anaconda Co. Underground mining was to be consolidated to three mines. The Ryan in Walkerville (pictured), for distribution of the workforce. The Missoula in Centerville for air and materials and the Kelley for bringing up the ore. The project was cancelled after the death of Con Kelley. Only the Kelley gallus frame survives.
