Restoration work on the Turtle Portage Marker on Trail Inn Rd near Lake Owen was completed in October! Thanks to Scott King for coming up with and building the beam structure, along with Gary Crandall. The marker boards were restored by Cable Namakagon Historical Museum board (no pun intended ) members.

It's been quite a journey! Starting in Nov of 2023 when the Turtle Portage marker blew down in a storm, we knew we had to take responsibility for this historic marker. It had already been remade in the mid 1980's by the Cable Historical Society. The original marker was erected and dedicated in 1936 by the Tuesday Club of Cable. With the help of Gary Crandall and his truck, the downed marker was moved to Carol Elliker's Garage. It rested there until Oct 2024, when Cable Namakagon Historical Museum Board members, Carol Elliker and Karen Gran refurbished the sign boards by cleaning, sanding, repainting all the letters and symbols and staining the boards. The task of figuring out how to remount the sign to the rock and concrete base took awhile... In the fall of 2025 a plan was made. Scott King did a magnificent job of designing and putting the mounting system together with 12x12 beams and heavy duty metal brackets. Scott, along with Gary Crandall, completed our restoration project in October of 2025. We are counting on this latest revision to last longer than the previous 38 years! Thank you for your interest in this project, and we hope the new marker will be enjoyed by all!
Coincidently, there is a 2nd marker that was dedicated in 1936 by the same Tuesday Club of Cable. It is /was located on County Hwy M, East of Cable. It too fell into disrepair and could not be fixed. Details of this project will be forthcoming!

The sign is back on the corner of Trail Inn road by Lake Owen! More photos and information to come later.

Yesterday was the perfect day for our Annual Cemetery Walk! There was a nice crowd on hand to be entertained by Jim Kinzie, and he did not disappoint! He gave a theatrical performance of Edgar Allan Poe's, The Tell Tale Heart, as Peter Lorre! Quite impressive! He surprised us all! We can't wait to see what he has in-store for us all next year! If I were you, I'd make plans to attend 👻
