Due to a cancellation, I have ONE opening in my "Pastel Painting: Where Land & Water Meet" (wetlands) workshop through Cable Natural History Museum. It will take place this coming Wednesday, June 3rd, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at their Wake Robin Pavilion on Randysek Road, just .4 miles off of County Hwy M. At this late a date you would need to phone the museum at 715-798-3890 to sign up. They will share your name and email address with me so I may email you the welcome letter and another initial email I had sent out with lots of info about the pastel medium. There is a supply list. The description: $45 member/$55 non-member.
Use your own color photos of wetland landscapes as inspiration to create unique pastel paintings on paper. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Museum, you’ll explore the art elements of value, color, and texture in your composition as you interpret the landscape, creating the illusion of three-dimensional space on a flat paper surface. The instructor, professional artist Diana Randolph of Once in a Blue Moon Studio, will demonstrate these concepts. You’ll practice many pastel painting techniques by layering pigment on various types of pastel paper. You’ll have the opportunity to view the Museum’s current exhibit, The Wetland Way after class. The suggested supply list is available at the museum’s website.

"Shipping live worms can get expensive. Especially when we need a re-supply in the middle of winter when heat packs add to the shipping cost. That's why I decided to try raising my own mealworm colony this year. It has taken trial and error to figure out a system to keep worms and pupae safe from the voracious adult beetles.

This week I checked on a bin with a post-it note labeled 'Teeny Mealworms, egg sifted 3/16/26.' I was delighted to see hoards of little wiggling worms. At about two months old, the worms were finally big enough to feed to our tree frog! Yum!"

Spring Explodes in the Northwoods

In just the last week or two, new life has exploded in the Northwoods. To my brain, it feels like a burst of fireworks. Instead of embers sparkling in the darkness, there’s been a surge of colorful blossoms, an eruption of vibrant baby leaves, a cacophony of birdsong, and a buzz of movement everywhere I look.

Read all about it in this week's Natural Connections or listen to the podcast. Find links to both at https://www.cablemuseum.org/connect/ or in our profile.

Participate in the traditional harvest and preparation of Black Ash trees for basketmaking. We’ll harvest trees on Tuesday morning and then return to the Museum where April Ogimaakwe Stone, member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, will guide volunteers in the process of pounding the ash to release basket splints on Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.), and Thursday (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) Our goal is to prepare a store of basket-making supplies before the Emerald Ash Borer ruins the trees.

We really appreciate RSVPs so we can really get some work done, but if even you didn’t sign up, please feel free to stop by for as much or as little time as you have in your day!
