On this day, May 28th in 1830 President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act into law. This congressional act authorized the federal government to negotiate treaties with Native American tribes across the southeastern United States. This act was highly controversial, even at the time of signing and the opposition included men such as Davy Crockett. The Indian Removal Act led to the forced removal of Native Americans across the country but with an emphasis on the tribes in the south east.

The turtle in the picture is the Eastern Box turtle (Terrapene carolina). The carapace (shell) can reach up to 20 cm in adults. Unfortunately the species is in decline due to habitat loss and overcollection for the pet trade. According to the Cherokee myths and legends turtles were an important part of the creation of the earth.
