“Encircling each central quilt panel are hand-painted portraits of community members, people I have met as the Intergenerational Community Arts Program Director at a senior services center. By weaving contemporary faces into these historical narratives, I aim to affirm the inherent worth of every individual, regardless of social standing.”

William Rhodes received a BA in Furniture Design from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and an MFA from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth.

Rhodes work has been exhibited most recently at the UK Africa Centre in London, England. The exhibition “Threaded Memories through the African Diaspora” was curated by Dr. Hassan Aliyu FRSA.

Rhodes work is held in the collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

“My textiles are inspired by my father, William Rhodes Jr., who founded and published The Black Times (1968-1978) in Baltimore, MD. The magazine highlighted Civil Rights activists and Black Cultural figures. As vessels of story, resilience, and resistance, my works serve as powerful images and calls to solidarity. They speak to the pain and grief caused by poverty, desperation, and injustice, while preserving the collective will to confront those forces.”
