Cambridge Wood-Fired Pottery

Cambridge Wood-Fired Pottery Open Daily Hi, my name is Mark Skudlarek. and I founded Cambridge Wood-fired Pottery in 1988. Please, stop by and pay us a visit. We'd love to meet you.

I feel so fortunate to work with resources as simple as clay & wood to make useful and beautiful objects for daily use. That connection, between materials and the people who use my pots, has been the ever-present inspiration of my work.

While the kiln was cooling yesterday, I had the opportunity to go to the Cambridge Winery and burn a substantial collection of grape vines. The ash is rather high in silica and can be used for a fatty, opaque white glaze. There will be pots available with this glaze coming up for The Clay Collective Spring Pottery Tour coming up May 2nd and 3rd. More information can be found on our website, https://www.theclaycollective.net/

Only two days away from the Earth Wood and Fire Artist Tour and my showroom is stocked with pots from the first two firings of my new kiln. It's been quite the process over the last two years that finally came to fruition this past month. I was pleased with how well the kiln performed as well as the results considering the kiln is still in seasoning mode. Each trial by fire reveals a bit more information that can be applied to the next firing which hopefully will lead to even better results. With that said very much am looking forward to the next one!

Over the years, I've felt the need to build a smaller kiln that would suit my abilities as I age. It's funny how things have a tendency to falling in your lap Call it serendipity or simple luck but once I made the decision to move forward with the project, an add appeared in Marketplace for firebrick. I just finished palletizing 4000 that in part, will be my new kiln. Located in Southern Illinois, the seller was super accommodating and extremely helpful. For interested potters, most of the brick are 3 inch Asley "Pilot" Super Duties . They were classified as "seconds" but frankly I found the flaws to be negligible. Mostly slight cracks, chips and minor warping. The price was fantastic and there was easy access to palletize them as well as a skid steer for loading and a local trucker. If anyone is interested, pm me and I'll get you the contact.
