We recently installed Julia Jamrozik and Coryn Kempster’s sculpture “Tomorrow’s Parties” as part of the renovation of ’ Raymond Park, which is expected to reopen soon. The Toronto artists imagine that the ornate, second-hand, cast-iron tables, having finished hosting birthday parties in backyards across the neighborhood, have gathered for a new community life together hosting all “Tomorrow’s Parties.” The public artwork is funded by Cambridge’s landmark Percent-for-Art Ordinance and overseen by .

Today! Build and play during a free, hands-on "Tiny Playgrounds" workshop led by Cambridge artist Mitch Ryerson at a pop-up maker space outside on City Hall Annex Plaza, 344 Broadway, Cambridge, on Monday, Oct. 19, 4 to 6 p.m. Refreshments. Free.

Using a broad assortment of natural, found and recycled materials, participants of all ages are invited to create a playground for very small users. These fantastical creations to take home could be for anyone such as a mouse (Stuart Little?), a fairy, or your favorite imaginary friend. At the workshop there will also be some larger moveable parts available for anyone to build temporary structures for medium-sized users.

The event is part of Ryerson's exhibition “Joyful Anarchy: Mitch Ryerson – Playgrounds" at ’ Gallery 344, 344 Broadway, Cambridge, from Sept. 21 to Dec. 31, 2026. See how play spaces take shape, from first sketch to finished structures, in a hands-on exhibition of playground design.

See How Playground Structures Are Hand-Crafted By Cambridge Artist Mitch Ryerson

“Joyful Anarchy: Mitch Ryerson – Playgrounds” is on view at Cambridge Arts’ Gallery 344, 344 Broadway, Cambridge, from Sept. 21 to Dec. 31, 2026. Visiting the gallery and all gallery events are always free and open to all.

For decades, Ryerson has shaped the way Cambridge plays—from the logs, ladders and hull-like climbing structure at Alberico Park to the ship in Cambridge Common’s Kemp Playground to the “Sensory Hilltop” at the Louis A. DePasquale Universal Design Playground at Danehy Park, which is part of the Cambridge public art collection. He’s also crafted a timber climbing structure for Boston’s Charles River Esplanade Playspace, a bench that can be played like a marimba for Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, and benches for Boston’s Forest Hills Cemetery. And he turned the tall stump of a fallen silver maple on Cambridge’s Hurlbut Street into a beloved Winnie-the-Pooh house (it was removed in 2017 after a two-decade run).
