Sabine Pass Lighthouse - Cameron Preservation Alliance

Sabine Pass Lighthouse - Cameron Preservation Alliance The Cameron Preservation Alliance is trying to repair and preserve the Sabine Pass Lighthouse which has been abandoned since 1952.

The Sabine Pass Lighthouse was lit in 1856 and has endured many hurricanes and a Civil War Battle. The structure was abandoned in 1952 and has since fallen in disrepair. Ownership was transferred to the The Cameron Preservation Alliance in 2001 and the alliance is seeking to repair the structure. The full history of the historic site can be found at http://www.sabinepasslighthouse.org

One of the Sabine Pass Lighthouse keepers was a Medal of Honor recipient for his efforts at the Battle of Port Hudson during the Civil War. He passed away while serving as a lighthouse keeper at the Sabine Pass, but we don’t know where he was buried, although it was likely in Sabine Pass just prior to the Hurricane of 1886. His grave site was likely lost due to the surge associated with that storm, so the National Medal of Honor Society purchased a marker for our lighthouse grounds. We will have a full unveiling of the memorial and dedication later in the year.

Old step removal continues to progress and the last ones are expected to be removed this coming week.

Lighthouse keepers conducted various maintenance on the tower when it was operational. Inside this set of photos you can see modern portland cement was used to replace a few steps at some point in the past. Workers are also removing the patches of modern concrete where possible since it is destructive to historic masonry from a difference in expanding and contracting qualities.
