Lavender and the rising sun!

I would love to hear what you feel when you look at this painting.

While visiting in the Bennett Valley near Sonora, CA one spring morning, I was captivated by the magic of a sunrise on a lavender farm— the cool air, shifting light, and scent of lavender was carried on gentle breezes. The golden glow of the rising sun against the purples of the fields inspired me to capture that harmony of color and energy.

I began the painting on a solid purple background (purple and yellow being complimentary colors), letting bits of it show through to balance the bright yellows of the sunlight and evoke the serene yet vibrant feeling of that moment.

This painting will add a touch of tranquility to your space.

“Autumn in Paso Robles Wine Country”

It was a gorgeous autumn morning as we were traveling through the countryside of Paso Robles, CA. We turned down this nice little road which gave us a view of this charming farm, showcasing its vineyard on the hills in the background - everything glowed in golden brightness.

Because of this, I painted this scene on top of a yellow underpainting.

The areas of yellow that I did not paint over, allowed the it to show through surrounding all the objects with a warm glow. For me, this made the scene come alive!

Painted this on a bright red background… .
On a recent trip to a small town near the Sierras , I saw this line of maples turned red and nestled in between some green leafed trees in an open area in Grass Valley. They really jumped out. And I loved how the golden hills in the background framed this grouping of lovely trees.

Because the focus of the painting was the red of these trees, I painted the entire canvas bright red. I then painted over the red letting parts of the color show through. The red gave the hills, trees, and shadows a bold and energetic feel.

Painted on a bright red background...

As the leaves turn and shadows stretch, I wanted to capture the vibrant energy of autumn in this abstract landscape. The interplay of colors and shapes invites you to explore the scene.

Because the focus of the painting were the red of these trees, I painted the entire canvas bright red. I then painted over the red letting parts of the color show through. The red gave the hills, trees, and shadows a bold and energetic feel.

What emotions or memories does this evoke for you? 🍂🌳

“Sunflowers Make Me Happy”

I love sunflowers! I paint them often. They never fail to make me happy.

What do you think of this painting? I value your comments

The story behind the painting –

I found this group of sunflowers off the side of a country road near Watsonville, CA with a farm in the background with these stately grove of trees backing up to the house. I loved how bright the red barns were!

I painted this scene on top of a bright red background as I wanted the sunflowers to really pop. Everywhere you see this red is where I let the underpainting show through. I painted in splashes of purple among the sunflowers which is the compliment of yellow. Both the red and purple create a dynamic feel against the yellow and gold of the flowers..

Let me know what you think of my latest painting
It’s called “Road Through A Small Town” - an end of summer painting. 24”x30” on Birchwood panel.

Here’s the story behind it:

Driving down to Paso Robles, the road took us to this beginning of a small town. The barns and houses were set against these beautiful golden hills with dark green trees nestled in the crooks and crevasses. I wondered what could be around the corner.

This was the first time I ever used a metallic gold to first paint the entire panel. Then I left areas for the gold under-painting to show through by not painting on top of those areas that I wanted to shine.
Thank you for your feedback!.

Oaks rule!
Here is my latest painting - “Three Oaks on Golden Hills”. Although it’s small (8” x 10”), I feel it’s full of California beauty.

What do you think about this one? What do you like or dislike about it? Would you hang this on one of your walls?

Let me know!

Here’s the story behind it if you’re interested...

I saw this scene at midday from a small road in San Martin. The rolling hills stretched endlessly, golden grass swaying gently under the afternoon sun. The sturdy oaks stood out - dark green against a palette of ochre and amber. My favorite!

A faint breeze carried with it the scent of dry earth and wildflowers hidden among the hillsides. The sky, streaked with clouds of white, hinted at a day that was both restless and serene.

Pausing here, I could almost feel it: that gentle reminder that the earth was old, enduring, and alive with my quiet memories..
