Just horribly sad! Run free little bear without fear.
At approximately 10:50 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2026, Canby Police were dispatched on a call that reported a bear sighting near Canby Burgerville. Canby Police tracked the bear to a private property located in the vicinity of North 3rd Street and Locust Street. Oregon State Police (OSP) and Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) also responded to the call.
At the scene, Canby Police observed a bear in the tree on private property. None of the responding agencies had a tranquilizer dart in their possession. OSP contacted Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) for assistance.
At approximately 11:15a.m., while waiting for assistance from ODFW, Canby Police observed the bear begin to climb down the tree. At that time, a crowd of people had gathered near the scene to also observe the bear. Additionally, the County Fairgrounds and the Canby Saturday Market, where members of the public were congregating, were just blocks away from the scene. Because of public health and safety concerns generated by the bear’s proximity to and movement towards the public, the agencies decided to stop the bear with lethal force.
“This is an unfortunate circumstance, and I imagine the decision to use lethal force was not taken lightly. Law enforcements’ first responsibility is to protect the health and safety of residents, and I appreciate the multi-agency coordination.” said Canby Mayor Brian Hodson.
Canby Police regret that such an action was necessary to protect public health and safety and would like to remind the public that ODFW has published a guide for preventing bear encounters. Please refer to the ODFW webpage “Help Keep Bears Wild” for more information.
