Lost Art of Nursing

Lost Art of Nursing Come explore the Image of Nurses in Art, collected and displayed by Melodie Chenevert. We no longer have set hours just call for an appointment!

There was a time when nursing was celebrated in song and verse. When world famous artists were commissioned to capture nurses on canvas. When magazine covers, advertisements, poems, and sheet music immortalized nurses. When books, dolls, and toys made every little girl dream of being a nurse when she grew up. There was a time when it was bold, noble, and patriotic to be a nurse. That time has come

again! Open Summer Saturdays starting in June. Admission is free! (also open May 10th for nurses registered for our event!)

Mom isn't on social media much but she has had so many wonderful calls and emails that she wanted to make a post in her words. She grateful to you all and while it is an adjustment to all of us to see a bare white wall at mom's house (all of the grandkids grew up playing at grandma's house/museum, it's all they ever known) the closing of the Lost Art of Nursing is what we hoped and worked for! ❤️

The Lost Art of Nursing Museum is now closed. I am happy to report that after years of searching, the collection has found a forever home. I have donated it to the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago. They have a room dedicated to nursing. Under their care, the collection will be preserved and shared with visitors for many years to come.
The new nursing exhibit will open in May including a reception on the 3rd. Check the museum’s website to RSVP. There will be several other special events at the museum during the month to honor nurses sponsored by the Hektoen Institute of Medicine. The museum will also give nurses free admission for the entire month.
I would like to thank all the nurses, friends and family who have who have supported me and my mission. I would especially like to thank IMSS for stepping up to make sure the art of nursing wouldn’t be lost.

The Lost Art of Nursing Museum is now closed permanently. We have been incredibly fortunate to be able to put most of the exhibits on permanent loan at the International Museum of Surgical Sciences in Chicago, IL. During the month of May all nurses will get in for FREE! There is also a reception on May 3rd to show off the exhibit (RSVP on their site https://imss.org/). Melodie has absolutely loved and cherished inviting everyone into her home to show off her passion - the art of nursing - and reminding nurses of their incredible and honored past where their profession began. Thank you for stopping by! If you can't get to Chicago any time soon feel free to tour the pieces on Youtube (back when it was in Cannon Beach, OR) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbiBYi5A53s&t=51s ❤️❤️❤️

The poem, The Women Who Went to the Field, by Clara Barton (founded the American Red Cross, was a nurse in the civil war and shamed Congress into signing on to the Geneva Convention) has always resonated with Melodie. She has taken the poem and illustrated it with beautiful artwork (found in her museum) of WWI nurses. Take a listen, soak up the images and remember how powerful just one nurse can be!
