📸 Saturday Snapshot

Before Cape Coral's neighborhoods, parks, and waterfront homes could take shape, there were the dredges.

This historic photograph captures one of the massive draglines used during Cape Coral's early development in the late 1950s and early 1960s. As canals were excavated, the removed earth wasn't wasted. It was used to raise and build up home sites throughout the city.

Canal dredging was the driving force behind Cape Coral's growth. In fact, during the city's first years, much of the construction depended on the speed of the dredging operations. Work often continued around the clock, with powerful lights illuminating the job sites through the night.

The network of canals that makes Cape Coral unique today was created one bucket of earth at a time.

Have you ever wondered what Cape Coral looked like before the canals and neighborhoods were built?
