Naval Air Station Wildwood Foundation which operates as Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to restore Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport, Cape May County, New Jersey, into an aircraft museum honoring the 42 Aviators who died while training at the site during World War II. Hangar # 1 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in S

eptember of 1997. The site served as an active dive-bomber squadron training facility from 1943 to 1945. Aircraft stationed at NAS Wildwood included TBM Avengers, Douglas Dauntless, Vought Corsairs, and Curtiss Helldivers. During this span, there were over 130 crashes which led to the deaths of 42 naval aviators. In June 1997, the NASW Foundation purchased Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport. The 92,000-square-foot all-wooden structure was in a state of disrepair and required extensive renovation. Under the stewardship of the NASW Foundation, the hangar was listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places at the National Significance Level. NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum now boasts over 26 aircraft displays as well as exhibits of military memorabilia, engines, photographs, and more. The museum also features a gift shop and hosts many special events. The hangar can be booked for birthday parties and private events such as weddings. In its role as a community resource, NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum regularly hosts activities including fly-ins, aviation festivals, big band concerts, swing dances, veterans’ ceremonies, historical lectures, school field trips, and senior tours. https://linktr.ee/nas_wildwood

Located in Reading, Pennsylvania, Mid-Atlantic Air Museum’s World War II Weekend will take place this weekend June 5–7. If you’re planning to attend, be sure to stop by the 4NCB display area across from the main hangar, behind the Navy aircraft, to see the late Jim Krombach’s beautifully restored 1939 Chevrolet pickup truck in Grumman markings and his Cushman scooter featuring NAS Wildwood-inspired markings.

Jim was a longtime NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum Board Member, friend, supporter, and volunteer. He was also a dedicated volunteer at WWII Weekend and played an important role in helping bring the event to life year after year. His deep passion for and dedication to preserving World War II history were evident in everything he did, inspiring those around him and helping ensure these stories continue to be remembered.

We are grateful that a piece of Jim’s passion for aviation and World War II history continues to be shared with visitors at one of the nation’s premier WWII aviation and living history events.

If you’ve never attended Mid-Atlantic Air Museum’s World War II Weekend, we highly recommend experiencing this incredible event.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED!

Do you have a passion for aviation, military history, education, or preserving local history?

Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum is looking for volunteers to help us share our mission and preserve Historic Hangar #1 for future generations.

We are currently seeking volunteers interested in:

🔹 Giving guided tours and serving as museum docents
🔹 Sharing our mission at community events and outreach tables
🔹 Assisting with special events such as AirFest, Wings & Things, Christmas at the Hangar, and more
🔹 Helping maintain and care for our historic WWII-era hangar and exhibits
🔹 Supporting day-to-day museum operations

Whether you're a history enthusiast, aviation buff, retiree, student, seasonal resident, or simply someone looking to give back to the community, we'd love to have you on our team!

Summer is our busiest season, and we can especially use extra hands. Even if you're only in the area for the summer, we welcome seasonal volunteers.

There are no required minimum hours or days to volunteer. Any time you can give helps us continue our mission of preserving history, educating future generations, and honoring the 42 naval aviators who lost their lives while training at NAS Wildwood during World War II.

We decided to hop on the Crayon Color Palette trend.

After careful consideration, extensive research, and absolutely no internal debate whatsoever, we've determined that every color at Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum is officially Hangar Gray.

Whether it's the walls, the exhibits, or that spot that was just painted last week, it all somehow comes back to Hangar Gray.
