Artist Anastasiya Bachmanova paints the light, rhythm and colors of the California coast - in her words “happy ocean art.” 🌞🌊🎨

From her early days studying science illustration to leading kayak tours and painting full-time, Ana’s journey has always been rooted in connection to nature, family and creativity.

We’re so honored to feature Follow the Sun at Rootstock, and even more excited to host her upcoming Holiday Card Watercolor Workshop, this Thursday, November 13! 🌴🎄🌴

Plein Air means painting outside, right where *life* is happening! The artist (in this case Rootstock Artist, ) isn’t just ~looking~ at a landscape, they’re *in* it. ✨ The light changes, shadows move, the wind picks up, and suddenly the canvas becomes a time capsule of that exact moment. ⏳

At Rootstock, we love Plein Air because it mirrors everything we stand for: slowing down, noticing what’s right in front of you, taking the changes as they come, and letting beauty feel simple and alive: PRESENCE! 🌊

Next time you see a Plein Air piece, take a second to imagine the view, the weather and the moment it was made in, because that’s what makes it special 🥰

🎨Shout out to Rootstock’s resident Plein Air painter, —photo credit to Kristi 💙

Jake Early has been pulling prints by hand for over two decades, but his story goes back further: to Corita Kent silkscreens on his aunt’s wall, to a hand-built press in his garage, to his very first water tower print in Chico.

“Screen printing is ancient, it probably came from China thousands of years ago. You use a mesh screen and a squeegee to press ink through, one color at a time. Each color needs its own screen, perfectly lined up. It’s low-tech, old, even considered obsolete, but that’s what gives it such a unique feel.”

For 2 decades Jake has created thousands of pieces. Each one bold, vibrant, and tied to a place he’s been, with sentiment attached. In his words: “99% of my art is about place. It’s basically my life in pictures.”

We’re proud to carry Jake’s exclusive Rootstock prints: works that capture Santa Cruz and beyond with his signature thick black sharpie lines and saturated color.

👉 Come see Jake’s work in the shop. Every pull, every sheet, every color done by hand. 🏄‍♂️

A great gift isn’t about the price tag.
It’s about the pause, the thought, the care.
It’s about choosing something that feels like them…something that will make them light up when they open it, and again every time they use it. 🥰

We curate gifts with meaning, made by artists with heart. Every piece at Rootstock has a story. ✨

It’s usually the smallest details that carry the most meaning.
A handmade frame, a hand dyed bandana, a piece of art where you find a new detail every time...
That’s what we love curating at Rootstock: one-of-a-kind touches that turn a house into a home, or a gift into a memory.

✨ Come find your detail this weekend at Rootstock!
& shout out to for the Capitola Wharf piece tessahopehasty for the gorgeous art, frames 😍

It’s no secret that we love and deeply value our artists. They are EVERYTHING! Without them, Rootstock would not be possible.

Our artist, Cristina Avalos, has lived many lives: architect, business owner, textile maker, mother, water colorist- through it ALL, art has been her grounding and guiding force.

From hand-drawn renderings of building layouts in El Salvador, her birthplace and home country of 40 years, to watercolors in her current home of the Santa Cruz mountains, Cristina’s story is one of resilience, reinvention and deep connection.

She is a mother figure and someone who we have deep admiration and respect for. 🫶🥹

Come see her work at Rootstock and meet her in person at the Capitola Art & Wine festival September 13 & 14!

Join our team! [LINK IN BIO]

We are looking for a warm, genuine and creative Sales Associate to join the Rootstock team. This is not your typical retail job. At Rootstock, it’s about building real connections, sharing the stories behind locally made art, jewelry and home goods, and creating an atmosphere that feels personal and inspiring✨🫶

“One of the things I love best about working at Rootstock is telling the stories of the artwork, who the artist is, why they do what they do, how they source materials, and in some cases the social consciousness they put into the work.

When someone buys a piece they are taking that story and spirit home with them. Or in special occasions gifting that to someone. Oh and in general we have the nicest customers! I enjoy the conversations I have every time I am there.”
-Helen, current part-time Sales Associate at Rootstock
