Historic Fort Edwards

Historic Fort Edwards Fort Edwards is the site of a French and Indian War fort in present-day Capon Bridge, WV. Near here on April 18, 1756, Capt.

Named for settler Joseph Edwards, Fort Edwards was part of a chain of frontier forts in the Virginia backcountry under the command of George Washington, then Colonel of the Virginia Regiment. John Mercer and sixteen soldiers were killed in an ambush by French soldiers and their Indian allies. The Fort Edwards Foundation, founded in November 1995, preserves, protects, and interprets the site. It al

so sponsors a number of events throughout the year to help educate the public about Fort Edwards and the people who lived there. The Visitors Center, which displays a number of artifacts excavated from the site and also includes a small bookstore and gift shop, is open on weekends from late June to early October. A walking path outside the Center leads visitors to the partial re-construction of the fort's stockade wall

We would like to extend a special thanks to Boy Scout Troop 45 for their community service at Fort Edwards, helping us with much needed trail maintenance. The young men enjoyed a weekend of camping and fellowship despite some windy conditions. What a fine group of youth! Huzzah and keep up the good work!

The Fort Edwards Foundation are thrilled to announce a new youth archery club for kids in grades 3-5 and 6-8. At this point, we are recruiting and training adult volunteers. If you are interested in learning more about this new club, please attend one of our Adult Information Sessions: Thursday, April 10th at 6 pm OR Saturday, April 12 at 10 am. We are meeting at the museum located at 350 Coldstream Road in Capon Bridge. See you there!

The Fort Edwards Foundation is pleased to announce we have been awarded a trail improvement grant from the Hampshire County Community Foundation thru their Hampshire County Impact Fund. The $1,000 Grant will be used to improve trail conditions in some of the wet lying areas.
Folks, these trails simply would not be possible without the continuing support of HCCF. Their community support of nonprofits and underserved truly has a direct impact!
