Preference or choosing always comes after looking.

A small traditional form Sherpai from West Bengal, its shape, its scale, and how it changes the space around it.

But there is a question that follows looking closely.

What do we find ourselves drawn to?

Some of us respond to a distinct form.

Others to the spread of pattern across a rug.

Some are drawn to an image and the story it carries.

Knowing the name of a tradition helps us recognize it.
Looking closely helps us understand its particular qualities.

But eventually, the question becomes personal.

Which work would I want to keep looking at?

There is no correct answer.

Because choosing a work for our home begins not only with understanding it, but with wanting to live with it.

Some things come with you when you move. Others find you along the way.

A textile that recalls home. A painting you stopped to look at. Books, photographs, and familiar things you’ve lived with for years.

They don’t all arrive together. Their meaning grows through living with them.

This is Living Mishrit: a home shaped by the places, traditions, and experiences that become part of your life.

Heritage works from India can take their place among those belongings, carrying their own stories into yours.

What is one thing you’ve carried from home to home?

What happens between noticing a work and imagining it in your home?

This October, Sherpai has given us an opportunity to explore that question.

We can begin by recognizing the form and learning where it comes from.

But looking need not stop there.

We can notice its proportions, its surface, the space around it and how its presence changes with placement.

Then comes a more personal question.

Would I want to live with this?

And where?

During Carlisle Open Studios this Saturday, I invite you to experience this way of looking in person.

There will be heritage works from India to encounter, compare and consider—not as isolated objects, but as possible companions to the lives and homes we already have.

You do not need to arrive knowing what you prefer.

Come curious.

One of the things that interests me about small works is how their presence changes with their surroundings.

Placed beside a book, or given a little space on a shelf, the form begins to be noticed differently.

It doesn’t need to dominate the room.

It can simply give the eye somewhere to pause.

And this brings us to something I have been thinking about more broadly at House of Saaj: the different ways heritage works can become part of the homes we live in today.

This Saturday, October 24, during Carlisle Open Studios, I invite you to come and look at these relationships in person.

Not only to learn what a work is, but to imagine where it might belong in your own home.

Sometimes choosing begins with noticing where you would like to see something every day.

A heritage painting does not need a museum wall.

It needs attention.

Give it space around it.
Let the eye rest on it.
Do not crowd the story with too many competing patterns or objects nearby.

A small painting can hold a quiet corner.
A larger painting can anchor a wall.
A detailed work can invite someone to come closer.

The goal is not to make the painting “match” the room.

The goal is to let the painting remain itself.

Gond, Madhubani, Pattachitra, Phad, Kerala Mural —
each carries a way of seeing.
Each deserves to be placed where its line, rhythm, color, story, and hand can be noticed.

A painting is not just something for the wall.
It is a beginning for looking.

Ask yourself: where would this work be seen slowly?

Small objects are often dismissed into a very broad category: decoration.

But physical size and visual importance are not the same thing.

A small work can interrupt repetition.
It can hold the end of an arrangement.
It can create a pause between books and another object.
It can become the point the eye remembers.

That is important to notice when looking at Sherpai this month.
Both the Sherpai bowls are intimate in scale.
Their usefulness is not measured by how much shelf or console they occupy.

The more useful question is:
What relationship could this scale create with the things already there?
Sometimes a surface needs punctuation.
Sometimes it needs a stronger stopping point.
And sometimes the smallest work on the surface is the one that makes everything around it easier to see.

A good eye begins by learning what to notice.

The wood itself has variation.

But what interests me here is what the form does with light.
One edge catches it.
Another side moves into shadow.
The brass becomes brighter.
A recess becomes nearly another tone entirely.

Nothing about the object has changed.
Yet the surface reads differently.
That is why I like photographing works like this in natural light rather than trying to flatten every detail into perfect evenness.
The changing light is not an inconvenience.
It helps reveal the form.

And in a home, it means the object will not look exactly the same at eight in the morning as it does later in the day.

Material is not static colour.
Sometimes the room participates too.

A collected heritage home may begin on the surface already in use.

The breakfast table.
The coffee table.
A desk.
A console where the day begins and ends.

This gathering brings together small available works that enter through participation rather than display alone:
— Aipan-painted coasters
 — Bhil-painted coasters
 — A Tanjore-painted tray
 — A Kantha table textile
 — A hand-block-printed table work

Each can become part of an existing routine rather than waiting for a special occasion.

Message House of Saaj for additional photographs or a private video viewing.
The works may also be viewed on our website or at the Massachusetts studio by appointment.

Begin where daily life is already happening.
