On this day in 1856, 33 camels arrived at port in Indianola, Texas kicking off the Camel Experiment, also known as the Camel Corps. The Army was looking for new ways to move supplies across the arid regions after gaining an expansive territory from Mexico. By 1857, they owned 70 camels stationed at Camp Verde in central Texas.

Camels could forage on the vegetation, needed little water compared to mules, could pack 600 pounds, didn't require shoeing, could forge rivers and wouldn't get stuck in the mud like wagon wheels.

Although the camels were largely successful in their duties, they became scattered during the Civil War. The last camels were sold at auction in 1866. For more detailed info, visit: shaonline.org/handbook/entries/camels.
