Mothers Day is this Sunday, May 10th! Did you know that Etowah was a matrilineal society? This type of culture traces lineage via the mother as opposed to the father. While this isn't common practice in most of the United States today, there are still matrilineal societies around the world, including several indigenous groups such as the Cherokee, Choctaw, and Chickasaw!

This Sunday, you can also join us for our Having Fun with Blow Guns program! Learn about the historic significance of the blow gun while making your own- you even get to practice shooting! This ranger-led program is designed for kids, but is fun for all ages. For more information, check out our events page on our website:

Did you know that May is Gardening for Wildlife Month? There are many ways to garden with wildlife in mind, but one of the easiest and most common is planting pollinator gardens!

Our pollinator garden contains a variety of plants that our local bees and butterflies love, including Asian butterfly bush, coneflowers, violets, and coreopsis.

We've got some great wildlife and flower-themed events happening this month, so stay tuned for those posts. And be sure to check out our pollinator garden when you visit- you never know what you might see!

The State of Georgia is currently under a Level 1 Drought Response, as issued by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD).

To help conserve water and protect our natural resources, the following measures are now in effect throughout the park:

Water Use Guidelines:
•Avoid unnecessary water use whenever possible.
•Limit shower times and turn off water while brushing teeth or washing dishes.
•Do not leave faucets running unattended.
•Report any leaks or dripping fixtures to park staff immediately.

Outdoor Water Use:
•Washing of vehicles, campers, or equipment by guests is prohibited.
•Use of hoses should be minimized and only used for essential purposes.

These small steps make a big difference in preserving water resources during dry conditions. We appreciate your cooperation in helping protect the environment and ensuring a safe, enjoyable experience for all visitors.

April is almost over but there's still time to celebrate National Native Plant Month! Here at Etowah, we love to celebrate our native species, and the Tulip Poplar is one of them.

This tree, whose scientific name is Liriodendron tulipifera, is a member of the Magnolia family. It can grow to over 100 ft tall, and its spring blooms resemble tulips. This tree was also a popular choice among indigenous groups in the area for making dugout canoes, since the wood is quite strong and these trees can grow pretty quickly!
