Coming at you this Memorial Day with some of our new minerals!

Both of these beauties are fluorite specimens even though they look quite different. Pure fluorite is colorless, but trace impurities and radiation can alter how the crystals absorb light. Green is often associated with the presence of copper, while purple is associated with a radioactive element like yttrium.

P.S. - The museum is open today!

We got our wings! 🦋

Tellus is so excited to be one of the newest additions to the Art in Bartow Iron Butterfly Trail.

Oh... and speaking of butterflies…
Members, make sure to register the kiddos for this month's story time on May 14. They'll learn more about the butterfly lifecycle, create a piece of wearable art, and, of course, be inspired to find more of Bartow's beautiful butterflies!

SPRING STARGAZING OPPORTUNITY 🌠

The Eta Aquariids meteor shower is coming next week with a local maximum of about 60 meteors an hour in the early morning on May 6! Look to the eastern sky in the constellation Aquarius, May 4-8 between 3 AM and dawn.

NOTE: The light of a waning gibbous moon will interfere with the shower this year, drowning out some of the fainter meteors. 🌖

To finish out the week, we want to put a spotlight on our Tellus Emeritus Volunteers.

Emeritus volunteers are those with a history of exceptional service. To reach this special status, they must have completed at least 10 years or 1,500 hours of service and be recommended by our Volunteer Manager and Executive Director.

Jim Friedwald
⭐14 years of service
⭐1, 726 hours
Jim has served in almost every position we offer - from planetarium co-pilot to security to bartending events. These days, you'll often find him helping out in the cafe during busy events!

Bob Gossman
⭐17 years of service
⭐6,261 hours
Bob is another volunteer who has done it all, but he's always been especially passionate about astronomy! He's spent many late nights in the Observatory, runs multiple space-themed Blue Crew stations, and often lends a hand at our Build + Blast Model Rocket Workshops. He also looks pretty cool directing the helicopter landings at Heavy Metal In Motion.

Jean + Leamon Hollaran
⭐17 years of service
⭐3,560 hours (combined)
The Hollarans have been a part of the volunteer team since the beginning! From daily tasks to busy event days, their dedication has made a huge impact at the museum.
