UPDATE::: EVENT POSTPONED
We’re sorry to announce that Monday’s event with Lizzie Jenkins has been postponed until further notice.
Our air conditioning unit has stopped working and cannot be replaced until after May 4th. The museum gets extremely hot this time of year, and we cannot ask Lizzie to speak or guests to endure an hour and a half in such conditions. The building is still opened for visitors to walk through if they choose, fans are going, and that is all we can do at this time.
This is one of the major repairs we’ve are trying to fund due to the hurricane. If you’re able to help, please donate through the QR code on the announcement flyer below.
Thank you so much for your understanding and continued support. I’ll

UPDATE MARCH 27th - THE RESPONSE HAS BEEN INCREDIBLE! WE WILL HAVE A WONDERFUL EVENING. Photos coming soon!

We’re pleased to announce our Members’ Appreciation Dinner on Friday, March 27th, at the museum from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Since reopening, we’ve been busy and grateful for all the positive feedback.
After Hurricane Helene, we did not mail membership renewal notices. With the museum closed, we focused our efforts on fundraising to support recovery. During those tough months, a wonderful number of you stepped up in meaningful ways. We’re so deeply grateful for every bit of that support; it truly made a difference.
Now that we’re reopened and things are moving forward, it’s a great time for anyone who’d like to renew or join. There are several ways to join or renew! Visit cedarkeyhistory.org, the link is at the top of the home page, stop by the museum during open hours, or contact Anna Hodges at 352-325-2172. You can RSVP for the Appreciation Dinner the same way.
Our Appreciation Dinner at the museum on Friday, March 27th, 5:30 pm–7:30 pm, is catered by Cedar Key Pizza and features chicken alfredo, baked ziti, salad, wings, desserts, and beverages. Enjoy music by Mike and Mary Peterson and a talk by Anna Hodges about the Cedar Key Cedar Mills, titled “Did We Really Make Pencils?” There will also be a brief meeting that includes introductions of board members, museum updates, and a vote on bylaw updates. Bylaws are available for review at the museum two weeks before the meeting.
Since 1979, members have kept this history alive. Celebrate that legacy on March 27th! We look forward to seeing you!

Cedar Key Historical Society Reflects on 30 Years Since the Florida Net Ban went into Effect in July 1995!

As we prepare to reopen the museum on September 27, 2025, we commemorate the 30th anniversary of Florida’s net ban. Passed by 72% of voters in November 1994, effective July 1, 1995, Amendment 3 greatly impacted local fishing communities.

To acknowledge this history, we’re sharing a video featuring local residents’ perspectives. The fishermen, supported by the Organized Fishermen of Florida, opposed the ban, which devastated multi-generational inshore fishing families relying on gill nets. They faced a well-funded campaign by recreational anglers emphasizing ecological concerns, leading to societal impacts like increased unemployment and family disruptions.

Supporters of the ban argued it was essential for protecting marine life and species like sea turtles, uniting environmental groups and recreational fishermen to promote conservation.

We remain dedicated to preserving and sharing these stories.

Join us on September 27, 2025, 4pm - 8 pm, as we reopen the museum with the addition of a brand new Cedar Key Maritime History Museum room.

Cedar Key Historical Society Museum Announces Grand Reopening

The Cedar Key Historical Society Museum is thrilled to announce the grand reopening on September 27, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. This special event marks a significant milestone, nearly one year after the destructive Category 4 Hurricane Helene struck Cedar Key, causing unprecedented damage.

It’s hard to believe that a full year will have passed since the storm's wrath — a year of intense restoration and rebuilding. The devastation was extensive, impacting both museum buildings, and grounds.

Initially, our focus was on restoring the Lutterloh Building, which sustained less damage. This effort enabled us to hold fundraising events to support the more extensive repairs needed for the Andrews House and surrounding grounds. The restoration of Andrews House took over six months, and we are proud to have preserved its original wood floors and the beautiful mural painted by Bill Roberts, which continues to tell its own story.

These past few months we have refocused from building repairs to exhibits!
Before the hurricane hit, all artifacts were thankfully moved to a safe location but unfortunately the museum suffered the loss of display cabinets, exhibit stands, and much of its layout. All the exhibits are being carefully rebuilt, curated and some with refreshed designs that we hope all will enjoy.

The work has been a team effort, thanks to many volunteers and generous donors. Without them, progress wouldn't be possible.

We are especially grateful for the incredible generosity of our benefactor, Linda Parker Hudson, whose support has been instrumental in our recovery.

Please join us as we rise from the storm’s destruction and celebrate our resilience!
