Artwork of the Week: "Grids" by Virginia Melnyk
"Grids" is composed of multi-colored, striped nylon panels traversing a grid of spaces. The visual depth and shape of each square is distorted by how each piece of nylon is stretched and secured to the farthest corner of its respective row of squares, creating a playful sense of structure and space.
Currently an architecture professor at Iowa State University, Virginia Melnyk’s academic background informs the way she utilizes different materials to create structure and explore dimension. Knitted textiles that represent “responsive architectural systems” are frequently found in her body of work. Many of these works play with concepts of movement, light, color, and even habitation. Through her knowledge of modern digital modeling and hands-on fabrication techniques, Melnyk creates pieces that challenge the way we view conventional architecture.
