Bank of America ‘Museums on Us’: September 5th and 6th!

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum is once again proudly participating in Bank of America’s year-round Museums on Us® Cardholder access program. The next opportunity: Saturday and Sunday, June 6-7.

Visitors to the Museum simply present their Bank of America®, Merrill® or Bank of America Private Bank® credit or debit card along with their photo ID on the first full weekend of every month to receive FREE general admission for themselves.

The offer is limited to only the Cardholder and excludes special exhibitions, ticketed Planetarium shows, and fundraising events. Not to be combined with other offers. Bank of America

Making Incense from Local Plants 🍃

Every wisp of smoke carries a story. For millennia, humans have burned fragrant herbs, resins, and woods to mark moments of reverence, to purify the air, and to connect with something deeper than words can reach. Today, few of us make our own homemade incense—yet the process remains as accessible as ever, especially when the raw material grows wild all around us. On Long Island and across much of North America, one plant dominates marsh edges and roadside wetlands: Phragmites australis, the common reed. However, invasive and often unwelcome, this tall, whispering grass hides a secret. With a little knowledge and care, its dried stalks can become a soft, slow-burning charcoal—the same carbon our ancestors used in ancient incense and pigments.

Making homemade incense from Phragmites [frag-ˈmī-ˌtēz] turns an ecological nuisance into a sensory bridge to the past. It’s alchemy in your hands: a transformation from invader to offering, from waste to wisdom, from reed to ritual.

Long before Salem became synonymous with witch trials, Long Island had its own infamous case…

Join us Wednesday, September 23 at 7:00 PM at the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum’s Reichert Planetarium for a fascinating lecture with Dr. Tara Rider of Stony Brook University.

In 1658, Goody Garlick stood accused of witchcraft on Long Island. Allegations of supernatural powers, flying on poles, and consorting with the Devil were not uncommon in 17th-century colonial America—but what really fueled these accusations?

Dr. Rider will explore Goody Garlick’s trial as a lens into the fears, stresses, beliefs, and everyday life of 17th-century New York, examining why accusations of witchcraft could take hold so quickly.

Come explore the history behind one of Long Island’s most intriguing witchcraft trials—and decide for yourself: when the unexplained happens, is it truly the work of a witch? 🔮

LONG ISLAND, LOOK UP TOMORROW NIGHT! 🌘

A partial lunar eclipse will be visible Thursday night, August 27 into early Friday morning. While the eclipse can be seen from many parts of the world, here on Long Island the partial phase begins at 10:33 PM and reaches maximum eclipse at 12:12 AM, when most of the Moon will be covered by Earth’s shadow and may appear reddish or copper-colored. No special glasses are needed—just step outside and look up! Unfortunately, the weather forecast isn’t looking especially promising right now, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed for some breaks in the clouds and a chance to catch the show.

New Exhibition Opens tomorrow, August 18!

Bonds, Steel and Steam: Forging the Vanderbilt Empire opens Tuesday, August 18, at the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum and runs through December.

Located in the lower level of the Memorial Wing, the exhibition explores the Vanderbilt family’s rise during the Gilded Age and the railroad boom that helped shape their fortune.

Featuring historic bonds and stocks, photographs, and stories of railroads and trains, the exhibition brings rarely seen artifacts from the Museum’s archives into public view.
