The Heritage Center & Gift Shop at 100 Lincoln Way East is an excellent place to explore the history and culture of the area. This historic building located on the southeast corner of Chambersburg’s Memorial Square in the National Historic District is a renovated 1915 marble bank building, the former Valley National Bank. The Chambersburg Heritage Center opens the door to the distinctive history of Franklin County and its communities.

Something new! The Heritage Center now has a table across from our Gift Shop displaying items from the Foundry Art Market. This is just a sampling of what you can find at the Foundry Art Market, which is located just across the square at 54 Lincoln Way West. If you are visiting the Heritage Center and you see an item on the display table that you wish to purchase from the Foundry, you can simply use your cell phone to capture the QR Code on the table sign to go to the Foundry’s website and purchase the item online. Show proof of purchase to the Heritage Center Staff, and we will bag it up for you! It’s that simple. And, of course, don’t forget to shop the Heritage Center Gift Shop for all of your Chambersburg related gift items …and take a tour of our Museum to learn more about this interesting and historic town!

HISTORICAL TIDBIT: Did you know that the Heritage Center was originally built to be a bank? That’s right! It was built in 1915 as the Valley National Bank and was used for this purpose until the 1970s. After that, the building was used for various purposes until it became the Heritage Center in 2004. The building is constructed of marble that was transported from the state of Georgia in order for it to be fireproof. You can still view the bank vault at the back of the museum, which now houses our printing press display.

Stop by the Heritage Center to view our new museum display! A very rare printing press from the 1800’s that was once displayed in the original Public Opinion newspaper building on Third Street in Chambersburg has been donated to the Heritage Center by Dr. and Mrs. Edward J. Drawbaugh. This printing press is a notable piece of American printing history, representing the transition from wooden to all-iron hand presses. This was the first all-iron press produced by R. Hoe & Company in New York. A press with a low serial number such as “1544” likely dates from the 1820s to early 1830s. Because they were shipped unassembled, surviving presses that have all original, working parts and legible, undamaged serial plates such as this one are extremely rare.

Since 2017, the printing press has been housed in a building on the square (next to the Veroni Café) when the Public Opinion had moved locations. The relocation of the printing press to the Heritage Center was coordinated by Chris Drawbaugh and carried out by the great guys who work at P&P Hauling, and it was no easy task since the printing press is extremely heavy. It had to be taken apart, moved in pieces, and put back together in the Heritage Center. It is now housed in the “vault” along with the original newspaper hangers that include several old issues of the Public Opinion newspaper. Many thanks to the Drawbaughs for this amazing donation, and to P&P Hauling for their moving expertise!
