John T. Hill’s exquisite new book, Norman Ives: Constructions and Reconstructions, is expected in early November. Today and tomorrow only, the book is available at a special, pre-publication price on the Norman S. Ives Foundation website:
www.normanives.org. The book, co-published by and .ives.artist.designer, is itself a masterpiece and a comprehensive study of the work of this seminal artist and designer. To learn more about Norman Ives, John T. Hill, and to see images from this gorgeous new book, please visit the Norman S. Ives Foundation website at www.normanives.org. As quoted from the website:

"Norman Ives: Constructions & Reconstructions is an in-depth chronicle of the spirit and genius of master fine artist and renowned graphic designer Norman Ives. This book introduces unseen treasures showcasing the brilliant variety and vitality of his work. It fully defines Ives’s signature use of letterform fragments. These became the lyrical strokes of his abstract constructions and reconstructions. The book is in itself a work of art.
Ives’s design and art anticipates the percolating type-as-art movement popularized by Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculptures. Type-related art has since become ubiquitous in painting and sculpture, as well as other massive architectural “type works.” Ives’s work fits squarely into this genre having roots in the early 20th-century Modern movement.

Ives was part of Josef Albers’ restructured Yale School of Art which transformed the traditional teaching of graphic design, leading it towards a more demanding and thoughtful profession. Ives was a rare artist who was recognized for his innovative work in design. However, his vision extended well beyond the field of graphic design. His paintings and collages are collected by major museums: The 1967 Whitney Annual exhibition of American painting, the Guggenheim Museum, Yale University Art Gallery and various other institutions."

ON THURSDAY: is sponsoring an online conversation with Steven Heller and John T. Hill about Hill's forthcoming book, NORMAN IVES CONSTRUCTIONS AND RECONSTRUCTIONS. The book, written and designed by John T. Hill, is an overview of Ives’ graphic design, personal work, teaching and publishing. Designer/author Steven Heller and Hill, who was a former student, colleague and close friend of Norman Ives, will discuss the works and creative process of this modern master.

Norman Ives’ teaching at Yale University helped reformulate the field of design in its transition from commercial art. Ives noted that the graphic designer must interpret and compose ideas in a public, universal way that will relate to the instincts and cultural ideas, conscious and unconscious, in all of us. Although famous as a graphic designer, .ives.artist.designer received recognition in applied and fine arts. He was featured at both the Whitney Annual Exhibition of American Artists and . His work is also in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Smithsonian, the Yale University Art Gallery and other major collections.

Ann Stewart Fine Art is pleased to present a photography exhibition, EDNA LEWIS: PHOTOGRAPHS BY JOHN T. HILL, at Crook’s Corner in Chapel Hill, NC. The exhibition will be on view from April 7th to May 7th, 2018. The show celebrates the legendary chef Edna Lewis (1916- 2006), often referred to as the Grande Dame of Southern Cooking.
This photograph was the image used for a US postage stamp, honoring Edna Lewis, as one of five great American chefs who revolutionized the nation’s understanding of food. The stamp series, Celebrity Chefs Forever, also honored James Beard, Julia Child, Joyce Chen, and Edward (Felipe) Rojas-Lombardi—chefs who introduced new foods and flavors to American culture.

This photograph and other well known images from Edna Lewis's four cookbooks and other publications are included in the show, along with photographs that have never been published or exhibited. In the words of John T. Hill: "Edna’s career and her life are a fascinating story. Her beauty, her grace, and her talent as a chef have made her an iconic figure...It was my good fortune, and my family’s, to know her as a friend. For over ten years I attempted to capture on film something of her warmth and wit. It is a pleasure to see that she continues to receive appreciation as a chef and as an inspiration.” UNC Press has just released a wonderful new book of essays, Edna Lewis: At the Table with an American Original, edited by Sara B. Franklin . The book includes a photographic essay by John T. Hill, as well as this photograph on the jacket cover.

The Oxford American is currently featuring Christopher Sims's project "Theater of War: The Pretend Villages of Iraq and Afghanistan" as part of its "The By and By" series. Sims was named as one of the 100 "new superstars of Southern Art" by the Oxford American in 2012.

"Chris finds so many ways to re-create the experience of being in these strange lands that the images seem more like encounters than portraits. Like the creators of Braggistan or Talatha or 'Iraq,' he has carefully constructed a village of sorts for contemporary viewers, and for future audiences—a vivid visual history. That he is both an original and precise photographer makes his stagecraft about stagecraft that much more intriguing and persuasive."—Alexa Dilworth, CDS Publishing and Awards Director
