The New Castle Historical Society is preserves and exhibits the history of the Town of New Castle at the Greeley House, the summer home of Horace Greeley's family from 1864-1873.

Only two more weeks to see our anniversary exhibition, 'The Stories We Share.' Bring the whole family to discover the stories behind rarely or never-before exhibited objects from the last 250 years of New Castle's history, from the Revolutionary War era to today. The exhibition is on view Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 11am - 3pm, through July 4.

Happy Juneteenth! It's a beautiful day for the whole family to celebrate local history. We're open 11am - 3pm with self-guided family activities and guided tours of our exhibition, 'The Stories We Share.'

Juneteenth National Independence Day commemorates June 19, 1865, the day the Emancipation Proclamation was enforced in Texas, freeing the last of the enslaved people at the end of the American Civil War. At this time, our building with the summer farmhouse of Horace and Mary Greeley, both of whom supported the abolition of slavery in the United States. Since Mary and their children were typically residing in New Castle in June, it's possible they were in this very building then the final enslaved people were freed. Juneteenth is also called Jubilee Day, Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, and Black Independence Day.

Our current exhibition features local stories from the last 250 years, making it a great addition to your graduation weekend celebrations. We're open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 11am - 3pm.

Did you know? It's been less than 100 years since the first class of seniors graduated from a public high school in New Castle! Before the original Horace Greeley School opened in 1928, many students stopped attending school after eighth grade, and those who chose to go on to high school either attended a private academy like the Chappaqua Mountain Institute or commuted to Pleasantville to attend their public high school. Learn about these stories and so much more when you visit us!

Get ready to witness history at tonight's Knicks watch party on the recreation field by spending time with our local history! Visit us today 11am - 3pm and meet some of our community's athletes from the past, including the 1945 Champion Greeley women's basketball team and the 1941 Greeley football team who went 6-1, beating their opponents by a combined score of 144-21. Get inspired by these and so many more victory stories in our current exhibition, 'The Stories We Share.'

Today is the final day of their internship, and we're celebrating all they've learned about our collection and museum practices this past month. Join us to congratulate these hard-working students!

A hot day is the perfect time to visit New Castle Historical Society and learn about cool local history! Let this painting by Bennett Lewis transport you from sticky June to icy January. Lewis painted this scene based on his childhood memories of ice skating on the property of the Milbank Anderson Home for Convalescent Children, where adults would flood part of the property each winter to create the perfect rink for local children. The Convalescent Home opened on the site of the former Chappaqua Mountain Institute in 1909 and closed its doors in 1967, after which it became the Wagon Road Camp, still operating today! This nostalgic local scene is on view in our current exhibition, 'The Stories We Share,' alongside a beautiful pair of 19th century ice skates. The skates, which feature an engraved silver-plated heel grip, were produced by Belcher Bros & Co. of New York City and donated to NCHS by Ella Sutton Van Tassell, who you may remember from one of our previous posts about the Sutton family.

New Castle Historical Society is proud to cohost a 1776 Tavern Night with Susan Lawrence Gourmet Food Market and Catering on June 27, 5pm - 7pm. Enjoy food and drink from the Revolutionary Era Tavern Menu and meet one of the most important Founding Fathers you probably didn't learn about in school: Dr. and Major General Joseph Warren. This celebration of America250 is free and open to the public. Please RSVP to [email protected] by Monday, June 22!
