This month's features the 35-star flag on display near the museum's exit. This flag was authorized as the official United States flag on July 4, 1863โtwo weeks after West Virginia entered the Union. It was made some time between July 4, 1863 and July 4, 1865, when the 36th star was added in recognition of Nevada.

โจ You can view several historic flags on display at the West Virginia State Museum including this one plus another 35-star flag flown over the Soldiers' Cemetery during President Abraham Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address", as well as a flag that represented the First West Virginia Infantry during the Spanish-American War, several flags from the Civil War, the 48-star U.S. flag flown by labor leader Bill Blizzard at his Putnam County home in the 1950s, and more.
