Plantation Number 4 (now Charlestown, NH) was the northernmost and westernmost township within the British Colonies here in North America from 1735 until 1761. Due to its location at the edge of the woods, and its townspeople, Number 4 held a distinctive position in the Colonies, and had an unusual relationship with Amerindians people of the Connecticut River Valley. Today, the Fort at No. 4 attem

pts to bring to life the rich heritage of the many people found at the edge of the woods. That is, the museum does not receive State or Federal support. It is a 501(c)3 non-profit as well as 509(a)2 charitable entity. LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Land acknowledgments serve an important role in raising awareness of Indigenous people and their enduring relationship as stewards of the land. In recognizing the land, we express gratitude and honor for Indigenous people, past, present, and future, who once or currently inhabit lands of this region.

The historic and reconstruction of the Fort at No. 4 is situated on the ancestral territory of the Western Abenaki people. These sites, located on the banks of the Connecticut River, have long been known to include settlements and be meeting grounds where important cultural exchanges took place. We honor and celebrate the Abenaki's long and rich history on this land.

As a non-profit organization dedicated to creating greater understanding of the multi-ethnic and multi-layered history of this area, we remember and recognize the enduring injustices rooted in colonialism and systemic oppression faced by Indigenous peoples. We are committed to sustaining meaningful relationships, to learn from and assist with the preservation of the region’s Native American prehistory, traditions, language, stories and teachings.

We gratefully acknowledge the Native Peoples on whose ancestral homelands we gather.

Allies & Adversaries: A French & Indian War Reenactment

Step back to the frontier on the bank of the Connecticut River and experience the drama, danger, and daily life of the French and Indian War at the Fort at No. 4!

Join us as soldiers, settlers, scouts, and Native allies bring history to life through immersive living history demonstrations, military drills, tactical maneuvers, camp life, and period crafts. Witness the complex relationships that shaped North America's contested frontier, where alliances were forged, loyalties were tested, and survival depended on courage and cooperation.

Throughout the weekend, visitors can: Explore military and civilian encampments, Learn about frontier survival and colonial life, Watch musket and artillery demonstrations, Discover the roles of Native allies, British provincial troops, and French forces, and Interact with reenactors portraying the people who lived this history.

The Fort at No. 4 stood on the edge of empire during this pivotal conflict, serving as a refuge, military outpost, and gathering place for those navigating an uncertain frontier.

Come experience the sights, sounds, and stories of a world where friends and foes were often separated by only a few feet of wilderness.

We have been asked many times (especially recently!) why we have an interpreter bringing the history of the bagpipes and their connection to No 4.

Our friends at Crown Point Road have a wonderful documentation of the builders — including General Jeffrey Amherst, Captain John Stark, and Lieutenant John Small, who hailed from Scotland and was a member of the 42nd Highlanders. As the Crown Point Rd was built between No 4 and Fort Crown Point, these men directed the stages from marking the way to refining it for future use.
