The longest day of the year, the shortest night AND the start of summer 🌞

All of it thanks to a 23.5° planetary tilt – not (as many people assume) how close Earth is to the Sun.

Happy Summer Solstice from your favorite science museum!

From the size of a dime to the size of a bowling pin – and yes, they’re all pinecones.

Our Nonliving Collections team preserves and catalogs the natural world in all its wild variety, and this range of specimens is a perfect example of why that work matters. Every object in the collection tells a story about biodiversity, adaptation and the incredible range that exists even within something so simple.

Come see the collection up close at Discovery Place Science in uptown Charlotte! 🌲

They met their doppelgängers and they have THOUGHTS 💭

Symbolically adopt one of our 7 animal ambassadors in Shop Science – just add $15 to your plush purchase and you’ll get an adoption certificate, a fun fact sheet and updates throughout the year – all while supporting the animal care team, student internships through Davidson-Davie CC and collaborative animal research behind the scenes.

Your favorite animal is waiting. (Both versions of them!)

Found something on the beach and thought it was just a cool rock? It might have been a sea bean 🤔

Sea beans are tropical seeds specially adapted to drift across oceans – sometimes traveling hundreds or thousands of miles before landing on a faraway shore. We have a remarkable collection of them here at Discovery Place Science, and today we’re showing off four of our faves!

Nature’s been doing long-distance travel wayyy longer than we have. 🏝️

Three planets. One sky. Zero telescope required. 🪐

On June 12, look west-northwest about 30–60 minutes after sunset to spot Mercury, Venus and Jupiter gathered low on the horizon in a rare mini planetary alignment. They’re not actually neighbors in space – it’s all about perspective. The plane of our Solar System lines them up like a cosmic coincidence, and we are here for it.

Naked-eye visible (weather permitting), so all you need is a clear view and a little patience.

Bonus: Stick around through June 16–17 and a thin crescent Moon joins the party 🌙

📍 Charlotte skies. No ticket needed.

Plot twist: the museum is MORE fun when the kids go home. 😄🔬 Science on the Rocks is your monthly excuse to get a little nerdy and a lot social. Date night? Girls’ night? TGIF energy? We’ve got you covered – after hours, adults only, all the fun 🍹 Don’t forget to add on an exciting experience, like our Dome Docs summer documentaries or a glass-etching workshop!

This Friday, June 12
Doors open at 6 p.m.

Summer break starts NOW 🌞

Thursday, June 11 is World Play Day – a global initiative from the LEGO Foundation and UNICEF celebrating the power of play for every child – and we can't think of a better place to spend it than here at Discovery Place Science.

We're marking the occasion with extra hands-on fun, including a marble run tinkering experience alongside all our daily programming. Build. Tinker. Engineer. Let curiosity take the wheel.

Come play with us this Thursday and kick off summer the right way!

🪸 You wouldn't expect a coral nursery in a landlocked city. That's kind of the point. Discovery Place Science’s Living Collections team, in partnership with local researchers, propagates more than 100 living coral species (several shown here), because the ocean's health is everyone's responsibility – even ours, 400 miles from the coast. Happy World Ocean Day, y'all! 🌊

Sharp, spiky and surprisingly stunning 🦔 Meet one of the fascinating specimens from our Nonliving Collections – a taxidermied porcupine, plus a closer look at the quills that make this creature one of nature’s most remarkable defense artists.

That oversized quill? Yep, it’s real. And yes, we had to do a double take too!

Our Nonliving Collections are home to thousands of artifacts and specimens that tell the story of the natural world – and we’re bringing you along to explore them. Stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes looks at the incredible things living (well, formerly living) in our collection 🔍
