🌱 From blank walls to a woodland wonderland – Saplings is taking shape!

Swipe to see the transformation of our dedicated early childhood space at the future Charlotte Museum of Nature. What started as an empty room is becoming a place where little ones can crawl through a hollow log, explore a cozy beehive, climb among sculptural trees and discover the natural world right here in Charlotte.

Every piece of wood, every brushstroke of that stunning forest mural, every carefully crafted exhibit has been built with our youngest explorers in mind. We can't wait to see curious little hands touch, climb and discover every corner of this space.

The seeds have been planted – Saplings is almost ready to bloom. 🌿

🐝 World Bee Day is today!

Did you know a single honeybee visits up to 1,500 flowers just to make ONE teaspoon of honey? That's a hardworking ecosystem in action.

Bees are responsible for pollinating roughly one-third of the food we eat. Without them, our plates – and our world – would look very different.

At the future Charlotte Museum of Nature, we're building something to honor that legacy: a living, working apiary right here in Charlotte. A place where you'll be able to witness a hive up close, understand the vital role bees play in our local ecosystems and learn what you can do to help them thrive.

The Blue Ridge Mountains are calling – and this spring, we're heading up.

Join us May 1–3 at Wildacres Retreat in Little Switzerland, NC for an unplugged weekend of hands-on nature exploration, outdoor adventures and the kind of connection that only happens away from screens.

Think starlit hikes, curious minds and fellow families who love the natural world as much as you do.

Spots are limited – and they go fast. Reserve yours today before the mountain fills up: https://give.discoveryplacemuseums.org/event/wildacres-2026/e746531

🦦 Otter habitat construction is underway – and we are SO excited to share this peek behind the scenes!

This stunning habitat is taking shape, and trust us, it's going to be worth the wait. Otter fans (aren't we all?) will have access to three unique vantage points:

πŸͺŸ The large glass window – catch a glimpse of that beauty already taking shape in the back!

🌊 An underwater viewing area – coming to the south side soon, where you'll see these playful swimmers in their element like never before

πŸ‘€ The overlook – peer directly into the holts (otter dens) and down into a sprawling wetland and marsh where the otters will splash, swim and just be otters

Charlotte, something truly special is being built for you.

Tucked along a gentle slope near the Sugar Creek Greenway entrance, the Frog Bog is a constructed wetland designed with one thing in mind: letting nature do its thing. 🐸

The environment is perfect for amphibian development – and a specially designed pump system will support frogs at every stage of life, from eggs and tadpoles to fully grown adults. With a sloping layout built for easy viewing access, you'll be able to watch the whole life cycle up-close.

The best part? Frogs have already started laying eggs in puddles during construction!

Our philosophy is simple: set up the right environment, then step back. No active care needed – frogs are pretty good at being frogs.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Charlotte Museum of Nature continues its progress. The wetlands are already alive! 🌿

🌿 Something special is blossoming in Freedom Park.

The first buds of spring are appearing, and the Piedmont is beginning to wake up in the most beautiful way. From our corner of Charlotte, this season feels like a reminder of everything we're working toward – a place where the wonder of the natural world is right at your doorstep.

Happy spring from the future Charlotte Museum of Nature 🌸

πŸ¦‰ This may look like steel and wire today, but one day it'll be home to some very special neighbors – including a barred owl and other program animals who will live right here at the Charlotte Museum of Nature!

Our new aviary enclosure is designed to follow the natural slope of the land, creating a dynamic, immersive space where visitors can observe raptors and other wildlife up close. These are permanent residents, ambassadors for the wild world we're working to protect.

Follow along as it all comes to life!
