Meet artist Yashua Klos.

Born and raised in Chicago, Klos creates powerful, large-scale woodblock print collages that bring together portraiture, architecture, and the material remnants of the built environment. His figures—assembled from fragments of friends, family, and imagined faces—exist somewhere between human and structure, confronting the physical and symbolic forces that have shaped Black life in America.
Klos’s work transforms materials like salvaged wood, concrete, and fractured grids into something more: sites of memory, resilience, and possibility. His work has been exhibited at institutions including the Frist Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Phillips Collection, and the Museum of the African Diaspora, and is held in collections including the Brooklyn Museum and the Studio Museum in Harlem.

Now, Charlotte audiences can experience his work in Yashua Klos: Cornerstones, curated by Dexter Wimberly.

Opening September 11, Cornerstones brings together Klos’s recent large-scale woodblock print collages, revisiting imagery he first explored in 2015. The exhibition considers what—and who—serves as a foundation, connecting the architecture of cities with the people who anchor families and communities.

What better way to close out the summer than this? A few weeks ago, our 5th Annual Youth Explosion brought together some of the most incredible young people in Charlotte, and we are still smiling. Our past Youth Residents and Race Matters Juvenile Justice youth co-led activations that reminded everyone in the room why this work matters. Youth and community leaders in the same space, building real connections before the school year begins. 📚🪄

Yashua Klos: Cornerstones

We’re excited to announce Cornerstones, a new exhibition by Chicago-born artist Yashua Klos, on view September 11, 2026–January 22, 2027.

Bringing together a selection of Klos’s recent large-scale woodblock print collages, Cornerstones revisits imagery the artist first explored in 2015: dimensional portrait busts intersected by grids, planes, and blocks of wood and concrete. Drawing from the built environment—particularly the street grids and layered histories of his hometown of Chicago—Klos considers how architecture can hold both the weight of systemic injustice and the possibility of new futures.

The exhibition’s title points to two kinds of foundations: the cornerstone that establishes a structure’s stability, and the people who anchor families and communities. Across Klos’s composite figures, fragments of friends, family, imagined faces, salvaged materials, and architectural forms come together to propose presence itself as a foundation—a monument of resilience built from the ground up.
