Lighthouse Immersive’s Artist in Residence Program (AiR) has been platforming local artists through multi-week residencies at Lighthouse ArtSpace venues across North America. The program is designed to invigorate local arts and culture in each city by inviting resident artists to interpret each exhibit’s theme through their own local and personal lenses.

Issue No.8 of smART Magazine presents an interview series with past and current resident artists across 6 cities. Click through the link below to their AiR Blog for artworks and interview excerpts from these artist conversations—and find the full interview in the Lighthouse Immersive section of Issue No. 8, out February!

On this day in 1888, đź—“ Theo van Gogh purchased this piece, 'Poudre de riz' (Young Woman at a Table) from Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec a good friend of his brother Vincent.

Vincent and Henri knew one another from a studio in Paris where they both took painting lessons. 🎨

Did you know that Van Gogh referred to his famous painting, 'The Potato Eaters' (1885) 🥔 as his first masterpiece, saying that it was "the best thing that [he] did?" Unfortunately, friends and critics didn't agree and his friend and fellow painter, Anthon van Rappard, even went on to say to him, "you can do better than this–fortunately..."
•
A collection of sketches, ✍️ along with letters to his brother, reveal his intentions to revisit the now iconic painting by mastering the nuanced gestures he wished to portray. He was adamant that technical perfection was never his goal. 🎨
•
Unfortunately, Vincent died before being able to prove his friends and critics wrong about the piece.
