It was wet, cold and a bit bleak but that is more appropriate weather for the scenes we were shooting than balmy sunshine. Flat light can be a photographer’s great friend in scenes like this, so long as the rain holds off.

The second addition was to bring in a horse and rider to run alongside the steam train. This is not a job for part time cowboys as the steam and the smoke from the train are uncertain variables for a horse. Ty Mitchell is an old hand at this kind of stuff; Martin Scorsese cast him as the bad guy in Killers of the Flower Moon and he is certainly a bad ass dude.

Ty is as good and game as they come, but even he fell off his horse shooting this sequence; the first time I have seen him do that in our six-year friendship. Huge respect to him for just getting up and giving it another go.

The result is a strong picture with enough layers to tell a full story. I had props at my disposal for the concept to have potential, but the ex*****on here was a little harder than most. But all you need is one good cowboy and one good frame, and eventually we got it.

Hunt Slonem is an internationally recognized American painter, sculptor, and printmaker known for his Neo-Expressionist oil paintings featuring bunnies, butterflies, and tropical birds.

Meet the legendary artist for book signing and champagne from 4pm - 7pm on November 19th in at the gallery. 2325 Crescent Ave. DM us to rsvp and reserve a book!

Slonem draws inspiration from nature and his sixty pet birds, creating lavishly colored canvases with thick brushstrokes. He describes his approach as a form of prayer and worship, influenced by Andy Warhol’s use of repetition. New York Times art critic Roberta Smith noted that, “This witty Formalist strategy meshes the creatures into the picture plane and sometimes nearly obliterates them as images, but it also suspends and shrouds them in a dim, atmospheric light that is quite beautiful.”

Having developed a connection to birds during his childhood in Hawaii and in Central America, Slonem now raises exotic birds in his New York studio which serves as a sanctuary for both the animals and for himself. His art evokes joy and serves as a reflection of the vibrant life around us. His works are included in the permanent collections of 250 museums globally, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

His work has been exhibited in over 350 galleries and museums worldwide, with pieces held in more than 100 institutions.

Erin LeAnn Mitchell is a mixed-media artist from Birmingham, Alabama. Her work centers Black futures and often portrays Black femmes, while highlighting aesthetic
rituals and engaging concepts of Afrofuturism. Mitchell envisions expansive spatial and temporal worlds through vibrant colors, emphasizing the freedom to be that must
be afforded to all Black people. Her pieces often gesture towards the rich interior worlds of Black life. She draws on her experiences growing up in a Southern matriarchal family to highlight the strategies Black women enact to thrive, while also navigating violently oppressive systems. She cites her grandmother’s quilting as a major influence in her own practice, much of which can be seen in her use of fabric
appliqué and collage techniques.

Mitchell’s attention to intricate details demonstrates a profound investment in care with each piece. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MFA in Art Education from Columbia College, Chicago. She has had solo exhibitions at AMFM gallery in Chicago, IL and the Birmingham Public Library in Alabama and has participated in several group exhibitions at Kravets Wehby Gallery in New York, NY, FLXST Contemporary in Chicago, IL and Ground Floor Contemporary in Birmingham, AL. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the Birmingham Museum of Fine Art.
Come and see this piece in person next week, part of our upcoming show “and sew it seams…” curated by opening April 25th.

Jiha Moon paints her detailed ink-and-acrylic works on hanji, a traditional handmade paper from Korea. In these delicate, surreal landscapes, Moon bridges the realm of history in Eastern and Western art. She uses symbols from her native Korea, from China, and from the pop-culture imagery of her adopted home in the United States. Her connected experience to these cultures translates into her work’s varied geography, wildlife, flora and fauna, and light and weather patterns. Into this imagery, Moon weaves references to folklore narratives and to the visual language of popular culture.

“Almost all my decent work with polar bears has been taken in flat or low light. When we travel to the extreme locations where bear encounters are likely, there is an acceptance that we must simply work with whatever weather we are given; it’s not as if we are there to do anything else. These locations tend to be light on optionality and patience and a few downloaded Paramount TV shows are a necessity. These assignments are not for people who get restless or need comfort.

Poor light pushes camera capability to the edge and ultimately reduces the margin of error in critical moments. This moment was one of those, as the polar bear was coming right towards me and carried a proper menace.

Polar bears “pop” in an image more than any other mammal I know because of their white coats. If those white coats are then highlighted by sunlight, it can all be a bit much and visually it often does not work.

This photograph, which I took recently on the Alaskan North Slope, works, not only because of the murky weather, but also because the bear’s head position serves to highlight the bulk that comes behind it. This is a big boy and this was the very last frame I took before I had to move. A ground up camera position is so important, but with that goes a need to always put safety first.

I was up in the arctic for a few days and took fewer than two dozen photographs. That’s the way it is up there. Less is more. “
