In 1918 Paul G. McIntire gifted this land to the city to be used as a park. Before that, the land was part of a plantation.
Before the statue of Robert E. Lee stood at its center, this ground was tied to enslavers, Confederate mythology, Vinegar Hill, and the violent denial of Black freedom.
This Friday, the Swords into Plowshares feedback period closes. So far more than 750 people have weighed in on the proposed designs.
On July 10, 2026 — five years after Charlottesville removed the Lee statue — JSAAHC and SIP plan to announce the final design choice.
