Close out the 2026 Spring POK series with us on June 23rd as we welcome author James Traub for a conversation about his book, “The Cradle of Citizenship: How Schools Can Help Save Our Democracy.”

James Traub has written extensively for America’s leading publications, including The New Yorker and The New York Times Magazine. In this work, he takes a hard look at how we’re preparing (or failing to prepare) students for citizenship, while also surfacing promising models and ideas that point toward a stronger civic future. The conversation will be moderated by David Bobb, one of the leading advocates for strong history and civic education in the United States.

Did you know that many people consider the end of Memorial Day weekend to be the unofficial start of summer? That means now's the time to start planning your summer adventures — especially celebrating the Fourth of July at Monticello! ☀️🇺🇸

Join us on the mountaintop for our annual Independence Day celebration and naturalization ceremony — where Monticello’s West Lawn transforms into an outdoor courtroom as dozens of people take the Oath of Citizenship, featuring a keynote address by Abigail Spanberger. For the comfort of all in attendance, the ceremony will take place under a large, fan-cooled tent! Guests can also enjoy music, concessions, children’s activities, and opportunities to connect with local organizations in the Community Partner Tent.

Plants aren’t the only thing you can buy at the CHP plant sale 🌿

Each year, Monticello Gardening releases a commemorative Plant Sale T-shirt featuring a historic botanical illustration — and this year’s design highlights the Twinleaf, a wildflower named in honor of Thomas Jefferson.

Our LAST plant sale of the spring takes place May 30, with select perennials (herbaceous perennials, spring ephemerals, herbs, and ferns), all fruit trees (apples and pears), and select trees and shrubs discounted — plus new plant inventory has arrived since our last sale.

You won’t want to miss it! Head to the link in our bio to learn more.
