OFF TO A NEW HOME: Sad to say goodbye to this vintage Clock Makers Sign but pleased to know that the new owner loves it as much as we do!

This morning, we put a different work on the easel in the gallery window and like there is with many, this one has its own story.
Michael made the painting of the magnificent Copper Beach Tree back in June 2020.
A few weeks later, it was gone and we didn’t understand why it should have been felled. Still in the early stages of the pandemic, with everyday life feeling quite precarious, we felt particularly saddened and Michael felt moved to write about it in his blog - see the link below.

We later learned, from the head gardener, that it had contracted a disease, which could have spread to other trees so, for the safety of the many, it had to removed.
We also learned that it was transplanted from another part of the Hudson Valley back in the 1950’s and was so large that the Taconic State Parkway had to be closed to other traffic whilst it transported.
Although still sad, we now understood and were glad that that by being painted, the tree, in a manner of speaking, continues to live.
More details of the painting can be found on our website (see link in bio) or simply call into the gallery - 3 Railroad Avenue, Chatham NY.

Jackdaw Gallery is an independent small business, owned and operated by Michael Gallagher and Mark Powell.
Michael, who leads the world class team of painting conservators at the Met, Museum in NYC, has painted privately for decades. Initially, this tended to be a vacation activity, but after they bought a house in Dutchess County in 2011, he began to paint more and more, inspired by the landscape and light of the Hudson Valley – like many artists before him! An exhibition of his work at Fairfield University Art Museum in 2017 made a private passion public, and in 2019 he began to exhibit and sell work regularly at ‘Gallery and Goods’ in Pine Plains. When the owners of that venue decided to sell the building, it seemed like a good moment to take the next step and go solo. it also presented them with the opportunity to show their work together.
Mark is a self-taught photographer, who developed a fascination with the overlooked detail in the landscape, which he patiently explored while Michael was painting. It has been fascinating to hang their work together and open the gallery, and they hope that you get a chance to visit, either in person or via their website.
