✨We are so proud of Cheraw native Joshuah Campbell on his 2020 Oscar nomination in the Best Original Song for “Stand Up” from the film Harriet. This song was composed by Campbell and Harriet star Cynthia Erivo.

Today Long Middle School hosted their Read In and I had the pleasure of reading to Ms. Olandag class. The book I read to the students was Ruth and the Green Book. I shared the history of the Green Book created by Victor H. Green in the 1930s. I demonstrated how families traveled with shoebox lunches and introduced them to local sites in Cheraw that were included in the original Green Book. Last of all, I shared The Green Book of South Carolina, a Travel Guide to SC African American Cultural Sites. This project and website was created by the SC African American Heritage Commission and you may discover more information at www.greenbookofsc.com. I enjoyed my visit and it appeared they enjoyed the visit as well.

In honor of our ancestors Happy Juneteenth, Freedom Day! All Different Now is a wonderful children’s book to read and share the history of this day in 1865. We hope you take the time to share with some young people the importance of commemorating June 19th as Juneteenth Day.

When an elder speaks, we should listen. Thank you Mr. Ted Bradley for sharing forgotten sites and local African American history around Cheraw, SC. He is the best storyteller and leaves you wanting to learn more. Make time to listen to our elders.

Yesterday we had a wonderful school group visit from the Center for Learning, Inc., Columbia, SC. When asked, “What was your favorite artifact in the museum?” Some of the replies were, “Kente Bear!”, “Dizzy pictures!”, “The fruit in the kitchen!”, “The Underground Railroad quilt!” There’s so much to learn and see at the Heritage Center, let us know if you are interested in a copy of our Educational Guide to book a tour.
