The Museum of the Cherokee Indian is the main interpretive site for the Cherokee Heritage Trails

These sites have been approved by a task force including members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Seven hubs organize sites in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. These are described in a website and in the Cherokee Heritage Trails Guidebook by Barbara R. Riggs. The project trains and provide tour guides certified by the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, the main interpretive site for the project. Cherokee artists and performers from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians are available to travel throughout the region and beyond. They are listed in an Artists' Directory. Cherokee Heritage Trails project began about 1996, as part of a larger cultural tourism project sponsored by the North Carolina Arts Council and other agencies. These projects have since become part of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, representing 27 counties of western North Carolina.
