🌿 A quiet summer moment from the 1920s…
Sunlight breaks through the trees and reflects in a calm woodland stream — a beautiful example of early Czech landscape painting.

đź–Ľ Oil on canvas
📏 28 × 22 inches

Alberto Rossi (1879-1965)
Oil /board 22 x 26 (56 x 66 cm)

Alberto María Rossi (1879–1965) was an Italian-born Argentine painter associated with the early development of modern art in Argentina. Raised in Buenos Aires, he studied at the Sociedad Estímulo de Bellas Artes under Eduardo Sívori and Ernesto de la Cárcova before continuing his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna.

Rossi exhibited widely after returning to Argentina and became a founding member of the influential Grupo Nexus, which sought to promote a distinctly national artistic identity in the early 20th century. He also taught drawing and painting at leading institutions, including the National Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Buenos Aires.

His work ranges from urban scenes and port views of Buenos Aires to genre subjects such as circus and social life, rendered in a style rooted in academic realism with post-Impressionist tonal qualities. Rossi’s paintings are represented in Argentine museum collections and remain part of the country’s established early-modern painting tradition.

JACOB MOSES SEMIATIN (American, 1915-2003)
Abstract expressionist
circa 1950’s
Oil on Canvas 36 x 24 inches

Jacob Semiatin was born 1915 to Hungarian Jewish Parents in Dublin, Ireland. Semiatin emigrated with his parents and siblings to America in 1920
He was an active member of the Brooklyn Society of artists
And was totally immersed in The New York School of abstract expressionism
Semiatin had his first one-man show at Contemporary Arts Gallery in New York, which is known for introducing artist Mark Rothko. Other prominent exhibitions include the Brooklyn Museum, Leo Castelli Gallery and Galerie Internationale.
Semiatin was notorious for his lack of interest in exhibiting or selling his work. Even though he had lasting relationships and strong connections with major figures in the art world, he refused to let himself get embroiled in the art politics of the New York gallery scene. Semiatin would argue about his lack of ambition with his friend Leo Castelli, the renowned owner of one of New York’s premier galleries which regularly showcased the works by the abstract expressionist painters. At the ascension of his career as a fine art painter and without explanation, he withdrew from the gallery world. As a result, the majority of his works were seldom shown and rarely sold. His legacy as a painter continues to be written.
Semiatin died in Manhattan in 2003.
