UPCOMING EVENT JUNE 6TH

In 1976, counties throughout the U.S. chose a special “Bicentennial Project” to mark the nation’s anniversary. Chesterfield residents decided to build a History Museum. This effort was led by members of the Chesterfield Ruritan Clubs who had been collecting historic items for decades. Most items were stored in the attics and basements of County residents, so the time was right to build a museum of Chesterfield history. The speaker will be Liess van der Linden-Brusse, Chair, Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia’s Library Committee.

Chesterfield County Museum Artifact of the Month
Western Electric Model 302 Rotary Telephone
Western Electric introduced the Model 302 rotary phone in 1937, designed by Henry Dreyfus, a well-known industrial designer. The phone’s durability and art deco style made it very popular.
It was the first widely used Western Electric/Bell System desk telephone to include the ringer (and other subscriber-set components) inside the telephone housing, eliminating the separate outside ringer box used with earlier models. Source: Wickipedia.org

Happy Earth Day from the Chesterfield Historical Society! 🌎

According to National Geographic, the first Earth Day was held in 1970 and is commonly celebrated by the planting of trees. Did you know Magnolia Grange did some historic replanting of their own?

The estate was originally named for the circle of magnolia trees that surrounded the house, which could be seen from the Courthouse across the road. Unfortunately, due to unknown circumstances, these trees disappeared shortly after the Civil War. Upon the preservation of the building and grounds in the 1980s, magnolias were planted on the premises and once again stand as our namesake.

Visit us to see these beautiful trees, which represent the historical and ecological legacy of Chesterfield.
