Museum Open House On Sunday, June 7th!

The third Open House of the season will be on Sunday, June 7th, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at the Historical Village at the corner of Mayfield Road (Route 322) and Caves Road in Chesterland. The museum is located in the basement of the Old Town Hall.

At the museum, you can discover more about the Cleveland & Eastern, the interurban railroad that changed Geauga County in the early 20th Century.

You can watch DVDs about the C&E; enjoy numerous historic photographs of the railroad and area; view many books, models, maps, and artifacts of the railway; and view an actual operating model layout of the road. Outside, on Village grounds, you can tour the original Chesterland station; and see an original freight cart restored by Society members.

Knowledgeable volunteers will be available to answer your questions and relate the history of this unique railroad. The Museum is free, but there are also opportunities to donate and/or become a member of the Society. Other buildings at the Historical Village will be open. The village is also having the annual Wool Hollow Event on this date.

Members Enjoy Annual C&E Hike

After many months of discussion with former and current owners of the property, C & E members had the rare opportunity, in October, to explore the historic site of The Cuyahoga Indian Club which was once located along the C & E. right-of way and Cuyahoga River near Novelty, in Geauga County. The camp, with remnants of its station (Stop 26), suspension bridge, and clubhouses, was a retreat for well-to-do businessmen such as John D. Rockefeller. Stop # 26 was between (Stop 25-1/2) at Chillicothe Road (Rt 306) and (Stop 27) at Sperry Road.

We send a big thank-you to everyone who joined us for this year’s C&E Hike, especially to those who traveled a great distance to attend. We give special thanks to Mark Zetzer for arranging access to the right-of-way and leading the hike; to Dan Rager for sharing his knowledge of the line’s history; to Adam Dietrich for helping organize the event; and to the surrounding neighbors who permitted access!

GoFund.Me Launched For The Scotland Station Poles Project

The C & E Interurban Historical Society is planning to install trolley wire at its historic Scotland Station in the Chesterland Historical Village. This overhead system furnished power to the interurban cars that ran from Cleveland through Chesterland to Chardon, Burton & Middlefield in the early 1900s. We hope you would help us fully return this iconic structure and track to its original appearance by your tax-deductible donation via: GOFUND.ME/0458CAC9B

Thank you!

Gates Mills Remembers Last Run

On the evening of Sunday, March 30, 2025, villagers gathered on the iconic “Walking Bridge” in Gates Mills to commemorate the last interurban car to run to the Village on March 31, 1925. That final run was from Cleveland Public Square to Gates Mills and was operated by motorman Sam Cahill. Mr. Cahill’s granddaughter Dorothy Cahill Slunski and his grandson, Dan Cahill, were in attendance at the ceremony. C&E historian and author, Dr. Dan Rager, related stories about the C&E. Mayor Steve Siemborski (not shown) shared ideas to obtain funding for necessary renovation of the 126-year-old bridge.

After the closing of the C&E, Sam Cahill became involved in the community of Gates Mills in many different capacities, including running the S.M. Cahill & Son Grocery where the Gates Mills Library stands today.

Many more photos and description of the event can be viewed on the Gates Mills Historical Society page.

The C & E Interurban Historical Society Commemorates 100th Anniversary of The End of C & E Service

In April, we celebrated the legacy of the C&E by three events:

The first event was a special walk along the former C & E right-of-way in the Geauga Park Rookery with Chief Naturalist, John Kolar. Although the weather was threatening, there was good attendance. This is the location where the C&E from Cleveland/Gates Mills split, with one line going to Middlefield, and the other going to Chardon.

The second event was a pre-season open house of the Museum for museum members on Saturday, April 5th. There was a variety of displays, an operating interurban model, car blueprints, and a viewing of the video of the meeting which eventually lead to the formation of our museum & historical society. During the open house, several members partially assembled a lifesize photo of the front of C & E Car #56. This photo will eventually be incorporated in a permanent museum display. One could also view recent models of two wooden trestles used by the interurban as it ran through the Chagrin Valley.

The final event was the April 6th opening of the Museum to the public, where it was the featured attraction of the Chesterland Historical Village for that month.
