The Kohl Gallery would like to thank everyone who attended the event Heirloom Surgery last week. The gallery was excited to host 80 attendees including mayor of Chestertown Meghan Efland . Over 50 pieces were examined by our textile, object and book conservators Rebecca Stern, Diane Fullick and Ruth Blackson that night.

The event happened in collaboration with the current exhibit Washington College Collects!- a sneak peek into the college's vast archive over two hundred years in the making. In celebration of the nation's 250th anniversary get a rare glimpse into the history of the United States's first liberal arts college and the vast history of the Eastern Shore! The exhibit runs until this Saturday March 6th so don't miss your chance to see the pieces. Also ongoing is fundraising by the College to restore and learn more about pieces within the exhibit and broader college collection.

The Kohl Gallery is excited to be hosting the works of three incredible Washington College seniors Shannon Smith, Ziggy Love Angelos, and Katelyn Reggie. We thank you all for the exciting opening night and look forward to hosting the three's senior capstone exhibits for the next few weeks.

Smiths piece MONKS MONSTERS & THE THEORIES OF HUMOR is located directly outside the Kohl Gallery and explores humor in the medieval period through an examination of the humorous marginalia found in the W.102 Book of Hours.

Angelos exhibit in the gallery BODILY focuses on explorations of the figure and ones relationship with the self both internally and externally.

Reggies exhibit in the gallery PLAY! uses line and repetition to explore the ideas of play and whimsy, with the materials guiding one through the work.

All three artists works will be open at the Kohl Gallery from April 11-May 3 2025, so don't miss the chance to see these exciting new works!

Please join Kohl Gallery for the artist talk and gallery opening of .ahmad.art’s ‘Devotions.’

‘Devotions’ is centered within Sobia Ahmad’s ongoing connection to the in Utah. This ancient grove of 47,000 aspen trees is considered Earth’s oldest living organism. Pando stretches over 100 acres and is unified by a single immense root system, making it ‘a forest of one’. In response to this unique and living site, Ahmad created ‘One Big Eye.’ This hand-processed 16mm film transferred to HD was made in collaboration with and weaves scientific, folkloric, and mystical ways of relating to Pando. Writing about this forest and its broader influence on her artistic practice Ahmad shares: “I see Pando’s root system as a guiding metaphor for interconnectedness. I am interested in the theme of entanglement through the lens of Oneness in Sufi mysticism, the power of film as a medium to remind us of our shared reality, and the political implications of relating to each other and a more-than-human world as an interconnectedness whole.”
