Society for Contemporary Art

Society for Contemporary Art The SCA was founded at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1940 to promote a better understanding and appreciation of the art of our time.

The Society for Contemporary Art (SCA) supports the Art Institute of Chicago by engaging the community in a dialogue about the art of our time and acquiring works that enrich the museum’s collection. Through its lectures and events, the Society has become one of the museum’s principle vehicles for exploring new and challenging art. Monthly SCA programs provide access to an exciting roster of leadi

ng national and international artists, dealers, critics, historians, and curators, as well as visits to distinguished private collections and major art centers within the United States and abroad. The Society has also made a tremendous impact on the museum’s collection of modern and contemporary art. On an annual basis, acquisition committee members review a carefully selected group of contemporary works and present them throughout the Art Institute’s galleries. The entire membership then votes to purchase one or more objects for the museum’s permanent collection. Over the years, the SCA has acquired more than 150 works of art by distinguished artists such as Emma Amos, Carl Andre, Lee Bontecou, Larry Clark, Tacita Dean, Nicole Eisenman, Leon Golub, Dan Graham, Maren Hassinger, Jasper Johns, Donald Judd, Guillermo Kuitca, Joan Mitchell, Jackson Pollock, Paul Sharits, Lorna Simpson, James Turrell, Martin Wong, and Christopher Wool.

An overdue — but very enthusiastic — thank you to Carolyn Lazard for their incredible lecture and conversation at the The Art Institute of Chicago on April 24. We’re so grateful for the generosity, insight, and thought-provoking discussion they shared with our members throughout the evening.

Thank you as well to everyone who joined us for the lecture and for such a wonderful member dinner afterward at Sofi Restaurant. Looking forward to seeing everyone for our last artist talk of the season on May 27th!

An unforgettable morning at FACILITY!

Two weekends ago, we had the privilege of stepping inside this incredible space for a special tour hosted by Nick Cave and Bob Faust. Their generosity, insight, and openness made for such a memorable experience—offering a deeper look into their creative practices and the vision behind FACILITY.

We’re so grateful for the time, care, and energy they shared with our community. Stay tuned for more upcoming member events!

This past Wednesday, we were so pleased to hear from Chair and Curator of the department of Modern and Contemporary Art, Paulina Pobocha! Paulina presented us with an incredible retrospective of the work of Mike Kelley and similar artists who have inspired her research and curatorial endeavors.

We then had a wonderful member dinner at Salon 61, and are so grateful to Paulina, the entire Modern and Contemporary department, and our members for joining us for such a fun and inspiring evening. Stay tuned for our next public program in March, and a happy holiday weekend from the SCA!
