Goldfinch

Goldfinch Goldfinch is a commercial gallery in Chicago focusing on the work of emerging and mid-career artists. Located in an 880 square foot ground floor space in E.

Goldfinch is an independent project space that seeks to provide a physical, conceptual, and discursive framework for contemporary visual practices through exhibitions, artists’ talks, informal salon discussions, and the written word. Garfield Park, we are embedded within a large warehouse housing numerous artists’ studios. In keeping with this context, we strive to bring an experimental, un-branded, and laboratory-like sensibility to our exhibition program.

A FOND FAREWELL

It is with some sadness but mostly, a deep sense of gratitude that I’m sharing the news that Goldfinch is closing. Over the past several months my priorities have shifted towards personal health and wellness issues, and so after much thought and deliberation I’ve decided that now is the right time to end this chapter of the Gallery’s history. The community formed around Goldfinch has meant the world to me, and I hope it has meant something positive to other people too. I know that if tended carefully, the relationships and communities we form can endure the transformations that come from both sudden changes and slow evolutions. Although the space may eventually evolve into a different sort of entity, I need to close this chapter and honor what is ending before thinking about what might come next.

I want to thank our entire roster of gallery artists for believing in our program and for playing such vital roles in it, and thanks as well to every single artist we’ve mounted exhibitions with, included in our Flatfiles, or hosted as program speakers over the years. I’m so grateful to all of the beautiful collectors who have supported this small but ambitious gallery and its artists, and I’m equally beholden to the artists and regular gallery visitors who together formed our loyal and consistent core audience. I also want to thank Elizabeth Lalley for being a formative part of the gallery’s DNA and aesthetic spirit, JP Culligan for playing an integral role in the exhibition mounting and design process of the gallery from our very first shows onward, Ry Thiel and Tom Van Eynde for their beautiful photography, and most of all my husband Andrew, ‘the door guy’ who greeted everyone who came through our doors for openings and public talks, no matter how cold the hallways got.

Our Instagram will remain an open channel for sharing news on the artists, organizations and events who have been part of our community. And, if and when there are updates on the evolution of the space itself—you’ll read it there first.

With love, hope and gratitude,

Claudine

What a perfect way to close out Damon Locks' solo exhibition We Are Our People/Listen to This, with a brilliant conversation between Damon and Andres Hernandez that went deep into Damon's visual art practice and its connections to his other realms of work. Thank you to everyone who came, to Andres for questions so good I could not come up with any additional ones!!, and to Damon for being such a cool and inspiring human being and artist, who I have the immense honor of working with.

Visit us next week at NADA NY! In Booth A-215, we are thrilled to be presenting the work of SaraNoa Mark, a NYC-based artist who painstakingly inscribes repetitive marks and complex patterns into materials such as clay, paper, concrete, sand and glass, with the works’ final forms recalling fossils, archaeological fragments, cuneal writing, and ancient monuments. Mark explains, “I aim to enter into conversation with carved languages—from cuneiform tablets to sidewalk graffiti—that document an eternal impulse to score picture into place . . . At the core of my project is a concern with how humans transform our physical environments (and) the role of public monuments in our collective cultural imagination.”
